Recently, USA Today set out to find the most popular restaurant in each state. So, just how did they go about this seemingly impossible feat? Yelp, of course. Using an algorithm that combined ratings and reviews on Yelp, USA Today was able to identify the most popular restaurant in each state. In Mississippi, King’s Tavern took the title. Located in Natchez, the restaurant has a long, interesting history that dates back to the late-1700s, setting the scene for one of the most unique dining experiences in the entire state. The building that houses King’s Tavern has been standing since before 1789, making it one of the oldest buildings in the Natchez area.
Because it was located in such close proximity to the Natchez Trace, the inn was a popular overnight stop for many travelers. Townspeople were constantly visiting the tavern, whether to pick up mail, stop in for a drink, or simply congregate on the steps in front of the building.

Throughout the years, the building served as a restaurant; it was always known as King’s Tavern, named after the original owner.
The menu is filled with mouthwatering options, which include plenty of gourmet flatbreads. The one-of-a-kind creations include Braised Brisket Flatbread as well as the restaurant’s signature, The Madeline, a perfectly baked flatbread topped with san marzano tomato sauce, roasted tomato, basil, farm mozzarella, and a choice of Italian sausage or Gulf shrimp.
There’s an entire menu dedicated to specialty cocktails. The restaurant even hosts mixology classes, where you can learn how to make cocktails, while drinking them. What could be better?

Aside from the menu, the atmosphere makes a visit to King’s Tavern a truly memorable experience.
As one of the oldest buildings in the area, it should come as no surprise that it's believed to be haunted. Many believe Madeline, the mistress of the original owner, is behind many of the supernatural occurrences. According to legend, Madeline simply disappeared one day, never to be seen or heard from again….that is, until her remains were found in the building’s brick fireplace with a dagger in her chest. Be sure to ask your server about the haunted history of King's Tavern, as many of the employees have had run-ins with Madeline.
