Have you ever wondered what it would be like to step inside a real-life fairytale? While our actual lives are certainly quite different from the tales of princesses and knights we might enjoy reading about, there are a handful of destinations near Detroit that offer undeniable fairytale vibes. If you’re keen on castles, check out these seven castle-like structures within driving distance of the Motor City.
This once-defunct building on Peterboro Street in Detroit was originally constructed in 1897 by controversial millionaire James Scott. Following an extensive renovation project, the property reopened in 2019 and now houses six apartment units—that’s right, a handful of Detroiters are lucky enough to live within this marvelous structure. When you drive or walk by, take time to gaze up at its stonework and towers.

Located within the beloved Olde World Canterbury Village in Lake Orion, King’s Court Castle serves as a wedding venue, banquet hall, and pub. As its name implies, the building is designed to resemble a bonafide castle - both inside and out. From its regal staircases to its coats of arms and armor on display, there’s so much to see within this truly immersive spot.

3. Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
If you’re looking for a destination that’s more subtle in its castle vibes, head to Ann Arbor and visit the campus of the University of Michigan, where you’ll find the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. This stunning stone building sits along State Street and houses all sorts of artifacts, archaeological displays, and excavation records. Meadow Brook was built in 1926 by an heiress to the Dodge automaker estate and now serves as an event venue, museum, and more. Does it get much more spectacular than this?

If you’ve ever driven down Grand River Avenue in the Motor City, you might have spotted what appears to be a commanding castle alongside the street. This stunning structure is known as Detroit Castle Lofts and, like the aforementioned James Scott Mansion, now serves as a housing option for locals. The building was constructed in 1900 and was previously known as Grand River Station before a thorough renovation.

When it comes to castles in the Motor City area, we’d be remiss not to include the Grand Army of the Republic Building. In fact, we’ve featured this spot in previous articles—and with good reason. It stands out among other buildings in the area for its castle-inspired design and magnificent presence. While it has housed everything from breakfast cafes to bars throughout the years, its exact future is unknown.

This beautiful writing studio-turned-museum was originally built by author James Oliver Curwood in 1923. Situated along the banks of the Shiawassee River, this small but mighty structure offers the public a glimpse into Curwood’s life and works. We can’t imagine a more enchanting day trip destination.
