Nature in Illinois is so varied — from open prairies to incredible caves, there are many well-known must-see nature destinations. Yet, sometimes it’s the smaller places you only find at the local level that provide the scenic views and serene setting you crave from nature. One of my favorite places to grab some fresh air can be found after just a short walk through the best park in Berwyn, Illinois.
Proksa Park, 3001 Wisconsin Ave., is Berwyn's largest park — and just off the beaten path is a hidden gem that you can likely enjoy all to yourself, if you know where to look.

On the west side of the park is a wonderfully wild pocket butterfly garden.

A plaque just off the foot path guides you toward the garden, and through the lifecycle of the iconic monarch butterfly.

Just steps away is a small brick path flanked by lush gardens of native plants, wildflowers, and tall grasses, all meant to attract and nourish butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.

My favorite feature of the garden are the butterfly chairs, which are great for resting and admiring the beauty (or, of course, a cute nature-inspired photo).

The garden is just one small aspect of the park, which also includes picnic tables, a playground, a pond, baseball diamonds, a children's garden, a disc golf course, and a duck-filled fountain. Though it's admired by many, it's usually available for some solo reflection or education!

Handy signage actually breaks down what is planted in the garden, so you can create your own private butterfly garden at home.

At the peak of summer, the green turns into a mosaic of color with bright, beautiful blooms that help the local ecosystem thrive.
