We’ve reviewed the safest places to live in Georgia, the most dangerous places to live in Georgia, and the richest places in Georgia, and now we’re taking a look at the poorest cities in Georgia. I have listed mostly counties, with a mix of a few cities.
Please be aware that when I say phrases like “poorest city in Georgia,” by no means am I saying that any of these areas are bad places to live! On the contrary, these places all have their own charm and beauty, and their residents love their homes with good reason. This list is organized by median household income only. Remember that in places with a lower cost of living, a lower income doesn’t mean a loss in quality of life. All of these cities and counties are beautiful, with one county on the list serving as home to one of Georgia’s 7 natural wonders!
Without further ado, here are the 10 poorest areas in Georgia…
The median household income here is $27,934. Even though it is one of the "poorer" cities in Georgia, this town is a city full of history and rich in culture. The town of Macon, Georgia is a lovely place to live even though the average income here is lower than in other cities.
The median household income in this city is $27,860. Calhoun is full of history and adventure with a few Civil War battlegrounds and nature trails to explore. If you are a history buff, you will definitely enjoy a trip to Calhoun, Georgia.
In Jefferson, the median household income is $27,703. The city of Jefferson is located in North Georgia and holds less than 10,000 residents. If you like a more small-town feel, you may really enjoy some time in Jefferson, Georgia.
The median household income in Clay County is $26,420. Clay County is a pretty small county with less than 3,200 residents as of the 2010 census. It is actually the 5th-least-populous county in Georgia! If you like a spacious feeling, you should check out the town of Bluffton, Georgia, which is located in Clay County.
The median household income is $26,107 in this county, which was founded in 1793 and named after John Hancock, one of the famous signers on the Declaration of Independence. If you enjoy learning about the history of the American Revolution, you should definitely visit Hancock County.
The median household income in Stewart County is $26,010. While this is one of the poorer counties in Georgia, it still holds one of the natural wonders of Georgia, Providence Canyon, also known as the "Little Grand Canyon."
The median household income here is about 1K less than other counties and cities at $25,807. This small county is the least populous county in Georgia, with its population being 1,717 in 2010. Taliaferro County has a very small-town feel.

The median household income here is $25,407. Although Turner County is the poorest county in Georgia, this iconic peanut statue is the world's largest peanut! The peanut is located in Ashburn. Peanuts were once a major cash crop for Turner County residents. If you are looking for unique attractions in Georgia, you should definitely head to Turner County.
