The Oldest Bar In Wisconsin Has A Fascinating History
The Monarch Public House in Wisconsin, the state's oldest continually serving tavern, offers traditional Irish fare and a rich history.
The state of Wisconsin has over 14,000 licensed establishments serving alcohol. That means two things. One: We're a fun bunch of celebratory people! Two: The oldest one in all of Wisconsin must be doing something right. The Monarch Public House has been serving loyal patrons for over 122 years, making it a beloved institution among locals and those who come from further afield to experience it.
The Monarch Public House is officially the oldest continually serving tavern or pub in the state of Wisconsin.
It was built in approximately 1893 by a men's organization similar to the Shriners, known as the Odd Fellows.
Originally, the upper levels of the building were for the group's dining and meeting areas.
The group came together as a philanthropic organization, but it was also a chance for the men to hang out and have fun.
The bottom floor of the Monarch was rented out in 1894 and the opposite side held a community grocery store.
Today, the same cozy, hearty vibes can be felt throughout.
It might be old, but the Monarch hasn't lost any of its appeal. The bar serves around 30-40,000 people during the peak season in October!
And in warmer months, sitting outside is a nice addition to the place.
People say that what keeps them coming back is the traditional Irish fare. Like the Galway pie and bangers and mash. It might also be the fact that all dishes are made with family heritage recipes. And, no grease or oils are used, meaning you won't find any lazy deep frying here.
They serve a traditional Irish Coddle.
And of course, the classic boiled Sunday dinner.
The owner, John Harrington, bought the place in 1995 to keep it from being turned into apartment buildings. His commitment to the local business and community shines through.
Come in and talk to him about the history and what it's been like to keep it going after all these years. And, of course, get yourself a cold Fountain Brew!
The Monarch Public House is located at 19 North Main St., Fountain City. They're open on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to late, on Monday and Friday from 12 p.m. to late and on Wednesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to late. They're closed on Tuesday.
