This Quirky Wisconsin Town Is a Beloved Treasure That Still Is Lesser-Known

When Wisconsinites (or Midwesterners) think of Door County, they likely imagine the vistas along the shoreline, cherry wine, or some other quintessential area iconography. Yet, for me, one place in particular encapsulates a truer Door vacation: Sturgeon Bay. The largest city in Door County, Sturgeon Bay, is a quirky place heavily influenced by a maritime culture you'd more expect on the East Coast than the coast of Lake Michigan.

Even beyond this ship-shape reputation, though, Sturgeon Bay is awash in a thriving arts and cultural community. Public art in places you wouldn't expect, and even a hotel where there's a Christmas tree up all year long, Sturgeon Bay is one of the most underrated towns in Wisconsin.

The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town

I'm not sure it's fair to say that the Holiday Music Motel defines Sturgeon Bay, but it sure does fit right in. This quirky, retro spot is a fully renovated vintage motor lodge with all the vibes you could want. The starburst clock in the diner area was a particular favorite, as was the year-round silver tinsel Christmas tree in the lobby. Every corner of this music-themed motel is humming with rockabilly energy. Guests at this spot don't even have to leave the comfort of their home away from home to get a taste of Sturgeon Bay charm.

Though that doesn't mean you shouldn't venture out. Sample the sweet (or not-so-sweet) libations at heavenly Door Peninsula Winery or check out the goods at Sturgeon Bay Farmer's Market. See more of the natural beauty of the area at Potawatomi State Park before slipping into the calm of the evening at Starboard Brewing Company. Or pop into any one of the bars or pubs and ask for a Wisconsin old-fashioned. Wisconsinites make them sweeter and with brandy, which will forever be the way I prefer them.

Where Is Sturgeon Bay and Why Is It So Unique

Only about 45 minutes northeast of Green Bay, this city is not far from the hustle of Titletown. Being right off of Lake Michigan, Sturgeon Bay (surprisingly) is home to some of the best bass fishing in the world—rather than sturgeon, hence the surprise. This connection to the art of the fish has made Sturgeon Bay into something of a maritime marvel.

Speaking of fish, one of the best things you can do when visiting a spot in Wisconsin is check out their fish fry scene. A fish fry, much like an Old Fashioned, is a sacred Wisconsin tradition. As far as a fry in Door County goes, you can't really go wrong with any place in Sturgeon Bay. Even so, I'd recommend Waterfront Mary's, Kitty O'Reilly's Irish Pub, or the Door County Fire Company.

Why It’s Still Flying Under the Radar

People tend to talk about Door as one singular town. Admittedly, I was one of them before I got to know it better. So, for travelers, it can be a little harder to recognize the names of the towns comprising the county. Sturgeon Bay is just a piece of the puzzle that is Door, yet it remains a place other travelers frequently talk about to me—without realizing they're even doing so.

Here is where the artists gather, the foodies devour, and those looking for community find it—even for a few days at a time. From my beloved supper club culture and Cherry Lanes Arcade Bar to the Sturgeon Bay Canal Rear Light, you can fill an entire weekend in this town alone. Or just spend a day enjoying this special town. A Door County experience doesn't have to be just any one thing, and few places demonstrate that better than Sturgeon Bay.
