Visit This Washington Restaurant for a Bowl of Soup so Good, You’ll Crave it all Winter Long

This colorful café is a cheerful winter dining spot even when the weather outside is frightful.

Wenatchee, Washington, wears winter well. Nestled between the icy expanse of the mighty Columbia River and snow-dusted Cascade foothills, the city feels like a living winter postcard when temperatures drop. Skiers and snowshoers flock to nearby trails, like the 10-mile Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail, while the Wenatchee Valley’s renowned apple orchards sleep quietly under frost-tipped branches, waiting for spring.

But in between powdery descents at Mission Ridge and snowy strolls through Riverfront Park, the hunger pangs are real, and you'll find locals enjoying warm, homecooked meals downtown after a long day spent hitting the slopes. In particular, you'll find them at Lemolo Café & Deli, a long-standing Wenatchee staple that serves up seriously delicious food and genuine small-town-style hospitality.

Small but mighty, the bright yellow exterior of this family-run café lures you in like a golden ticket to some of the freshest, most comforting food of your life. When you step inside you're immediately greeted by a cheerful kaleidoscope of color — brightly painted walls adorned with rotating artwork from local creators, a rainbow of mismatched chairs that somehow all fit together, and a palpable energy that’s downright contagious.

It’s a whole vibe and a far cry from the bland aesthetic of the café's original styling. When the Postelwait brothers took over the restaurant in the early 2000s, the original dated interior was one of the first things to go. Now, two decades and quite a bit of paint later, Lemolo Café continues to rock a vibrant aesthetic — both inside and out — that immediately brings smiles to patrons' faces.

Open shelving shows off a mesmerizing collection of funky kitsch to admire while you wait for your meal. Vintage metal signs and rusty antiques pay an eclectic homage to the Columbia region's diverse offerings. Ice skates and old bicycles look just as comfortable next to the Pabst Blue Ribbon signs as they do next to the fashionable yeti that hangs from the ceiling.

It's unique, it's fun, it's inviting, and it's 100 percent authentic — a refreshing taste of sunshine on Washington's less-than-sunshiney days.

But while the décor shows off the restaurant's quirky personality in spades, the fantastic food is what put this one-of-a-kind eatery on the map and keeps diners coming back time and time again. The rave reviews speak for themselves.

The swath of menu offerings (over 100 of them on any given day) are all fresh, made from scratch, and thoughtfully crafted — a combo that is especially comforting when winter's chill sets in. Pizzas, calzones, pastas, and filling sandwiches flood the menu, which is ever-changing and colorfully scrawled across the chalkboard walls.

For those looking for a new vegetarian or vegan haunt, Lemolo will no doubt become your new go-to. It's just one of the many things they're known for. But for those who lean toward the meatier side of the dining spectrum, don't think for one moment that the cuisine here is all piles of lettuce on bland, gluten-free bread! Instead, you'll find the deliciously unexpected Blue Philly Pizza (steak, blue cheese, mushrooms, and peppers) and the hearty Grinder sandwich (ham and capocollo, salami, pepperoni, extras) right alongside the creamy Pesto Veg pasta (tortellini, veggies, and Lemolo's own housemade pesto).

Much like the décor, it's a fantastically colorful menu that appeals to — well, just about everyone! Carnivores and pescatarians alike, and every cuisine in between.

But it just keeps getting better, because there's soup too.

YES, PLEASE.

Soup might just be our favorite winter comfort food, if we're being honest. From hearty, decadent helpings of thick chowder to the smooth, warm-your-bones flavors of a brothy bowl loaded with veggies ... soup is life. And Lemolo does it to perfection.

One of the many things that makes Lemolo Café & Deli so special is their use of hyperlocal ingredients — as in harvested right from their own backyard. And that creative, farm-to-table, homemade deliciousness doesn't just apply to sandwich and pizza toppings, but to their soups as well.

Whatever is in season is what's simmering in the pot here!

You'll find at least four soups on deck on any given day, and there's always something new to try. The Nutty Pumpkin (made with owner-grown pumpkins and topped with roasted pecans) or Roasted Corn and Garlic just beg to be devoured on a chilly day. Then there's the housemade Atomic Pork Chili or classic Tomato; both pair perfectly with one of Lemolo's toasted sandwiches.

Texas Turkey, Ham and Barley, French Onion, Zesty Minestrone, Moroccan Sweet Potato — the options are endless, and you'll love coming back regularly to see (and smell … and taste …) what's being ladled up. If you’re the kind of person who loves variety, Lemolo definitely delivers! Of course, if you're like us and can't choose just one, Lemolo also offers something extra special: spoon-worthy soup flights! It's a soup lover's dream come true.

But what's a hearty helping of soup without a bread bowl to go with it? Or a sandwich without fresh-made bread holding all that piled-high goodness together? You'll find both at Lemolo. In fact, pretty much everything here is made in-house! Sauces, desserts, pizza dough, you name it.

Sure, Lemolo’s soups could headline their own show, but the supporting cast is just as fantastic and as fresh as it gets. The sandwiches we mentioned? Positively stacked with same-day-picked, flavorful ingredients between thick slices of house bread baked on-site. The turkey pesto is a local legend, combining roasted turkey with herbaceous house-made pesto and creamy provolone, while the vegetarian panini proves that roasted vegetables can be every bit as satisfying as their protein counterparts.

And don’t overlook the baked goods.

Cinnamon rolls, sweet breads, and other fresh-baked goodies greet you at the counter, tempting you to add just one more treat to your order. Light, moist, and not overly sweet, these pastries are the kind of pick-me-up everyone needs on a gray Wenatchee morning!

Whether in the biting, frosty depths of winter or at the height of spring, some places welcome you like an old friend. Lemolo Café & Deli is a wildly creative restaurant that not only greets with open arms but surprises and delights with its cozy vibe, fresh-made eats, and genuine sense of community. And, in our opinion, some of the best soup in the state (not to mention the coolest yeti we've ever had the pleasure of dining with!).
