A Virginia Dining Experience So Exceptional, It’s Nationally Recognized

Some of the best barbecue in the South can be found inside this vintage Airstream that sells out daily.

Southern Living Magazine has ranked a humble barbecue restaurant in Virginia as one of the state's best and we'd argue, it's among the best in the entire South. You'll find Mama Jean's in Roanoke, Virginia, inside a vintage 1956 Airstream Food Trailer. The name is a tribute to the owner, Madison Ruckel's mother. Today, Mama Jean's is synonymous with exceptional barbecue, mouthwatering sides, and some of the best banana pudding you'll ever try. Come with us as we dive into what makes this unassuming barbecue joint so phenomenal.

Mama Jean's Barbecue is parked at 3404 Brandon Ave SW, Roanoke, VA. You'll immediately recognize the silver Airstream with a menu out front showcasing all the offerings. Pro tip: you'll want to arrive early. As one glowing review states, "Good food doesn't stay around long." Mama Jean's is currently open Thursday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.; however, by the time of closing, most of the food has been sold.

So what's on the menu at this fan favorite? The offerings change daily, so you'll want to be sure to follow on Facebook for the most up-to-date menus. If it's your first time, you'll want to try the brisket, whether it's in the form of a sandwich or served up with sides. (The smoked brisket sandwich is often on the menu given its popularity.) Folks also enjoy the pulled pork, which is consistently flavorful and has a pleasing texture.

One of the best parts about visiting Mama Jean's is the unexpected menu items, such as the birria tacos or the smash burgers. Another must? The hot chicken sandwich, complete with lettuce, tomatoes, white onions, pickles, and a special sauce.

Equally as delicious as the main courses are the sides, which are homemade and rotate frequently. Two favorites are the mac and cheese and the cole slaw. But the real winner is the banana pudding. Trust us, if it's available, you'll want to order some.
