Spanky's Grille is located in Kitty Hawk, naturally one of the most visited spots in the Outer Banks — especially since getting here doesn't require hopping on a ferry.

From day one, when Spanky's first opened in 2003, the business has been booming.

At first glance, it's easy to see why. The place is inviting, the staff is friendly, and well... the food is out-of-this-world good.

The menu at Spanky's features comfort food favorites like burgers, hot dogs, French fries and more.

And a few specialty items, such as the footlong hot dog, and the habanero voodoo burger make dining here a delight. But there's another very big reason Spanky's is so popular:

Their Viking Burger Challenge! It features two pounds of ground beef and a side of French Fries.

Guests who finish the challenge in under an hour get a t-shirt and their name and state of residence added to the wall of fame.

Each year, Spanky's keeps a runny tally of the number of Viking Burger Challenges successfully completed by residents from each state. Those who win the Viking Burger Challenge are proud to earn another point for their home state.

Currently, Virginia is in the lead for 2019, with Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Virginia lagging far, far behind.

Nearly 400 Viking Burgers have been consumed by visitors from 25 states in 2019. Moreover, since the Viking Burger Challenge debuted, more than 4,000 of the epic burgers have been consumed in under an hour. Guests winning the challenge have been from 44 states.

In 2019, it seems Virginia will claim top honors for the year because, as of today, Spanky's is closed for the holidays, reopening on Jan. 6, 2020.
