Pie is a New Jersey staple year-round, especially with all the fresh fruit in the Garden State. Still, the holidays are approaching and that means the official start of pie season. What makes a more delectable Thanksgiving dessert? If you're craving an indulgent slice, you're in luck. It isn't hard to find a good pie in New Jersey, but these are some of the best (in no particular order).

1. Penza's Pies, Hammonton

Penza's Pies at the Red Barn Cafe offers a sizable selection of sweet and savory pies, seasonally. Thanksgiving offerings include Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Peach Ricotta, Apple Blueberry, and over a dozen other delectable options.

2. The Pie Store, Montclair

This British bakery offers traditional desserts and goodies from the UK. Alongside specialty chocolates and scones, you will find incredible Key Lime and Banana Toffee pies.

3. The Macaroon Shop, Avon By The Sea

Though it may be known for its Macaroons, this bakery offers a variety of sweet treats. The custom cakes are gorgeous and the pies are perfectly sized, ranging from 6" - 10". The Lemon Meringue is a favorite.

4. Johnson's Corner Farm, Medford

This family favorite destination offers so much more than pumpkin picking and hayrides. Enjoy some of the freshest pie around, with 5 different kinds of apple pie to choose from. There is a pie tasting party today (11/14-11/15), to support charity. Upcoming events include holiday hayrides and a classic car show.

5. Rosaline's Farm & Bakery, Augusta

Enjoy soups, sandwiches and scrumptious pies. Apple Crumb is a popular pick, and they even offer a gluten-free Coconut Custard Meringue.

6. Homestead Farm Market, Lambertville

This local farmer's market may not seem like much on the outside, but they offer a great selection of fresh fruits, veggies, and dairy products. The Pumpkin Pie is a seasonal favorite, but the Peachberry and Rhubarb Berry are also flavorful picks.

7. Emery's Berry Patch, New Egypt

A major producer of blueberries in the state, you have to try their Blueberry Pies. Other standout stars include the Trifecta (Blueberries, Cherries + Peaches) and Maple Apple.

8. Mara's Cafe & Bakery, Denville

My oh my, this is some good pie! Enjoy an extensive selection of foods, desserts and pies at this popular shop. The Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie is a personal favorite, but Pecan, Peach, and Three Nut Cranberry are all great choices.

9. Ye Olde Pie Shoppe, Little Silver

The custom cakes are so impeccably crafted, you might forget that they make anything else. Try the Cranberry-Apple Pie or one of the Cookie Pies.

10. Bertuzzi's Farm Market, Milmay

This South Jersey farmer's market features a greenhouse and bakery. There are a variety of pies to choose from, but the Caramel Apple Walnut is probably the most popular.

11. Mr. Tod's Pie Factory, Englewood

Mr. Tod's pies are out of this world! Country Living Magazine and Oprah named Mr. Tod’s one of the best mail order pie companies in America and the bakery has been featured in the New York Times, on The Today Show, ABC, and CNBC. Locations in Montclair and South Bound Brook are coming soon. The Banana Cream and Apple are popular picks.

12. Battleview Orchards, Freehold

Besides seasonal pick-your-own fruit opportunities, the desserts here are just delightful. Enjoy Coconut Custard, Lemon Crunch, Pecan, Pumpkin, and Sweet Potato this season; wait for the summer to score some amazing Pina Colada Pie!
