Initially, it was the tamales that attracted customers to Doe’s. Eventually, Mamie was given a partial recipe for tamales. She improved the recipe and began selling tamales, which is considered the start of the restaurant.

However as time went on, Doe’s became known for another specialty — its steaks.

It all began with a local doctor who had a hankering for a steak. According to Doe’s website, the doctor would stop by in between calls, and "Big Doe would cook him up a steak and feed him in the back. Pretty soon the doctor brought another doctor then a lawyer and before he knew it Doe had a regular restaurant in the back." Over the years, Doe’s has won numerous awards for its steaks.
