The term "hidden gem" is normally associated with secluded places in rural Mississippi, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes, hidden gems can be found in unexpected places, like on Main Street in a college town. Read on to learn about the secluded spot that’s recently been named one of the best in the entire country.
The June 2018 issue of Men’s Journal featured a list of the 19 best hidden bars in the country, and coming in at #14 is The Guest Room in Starkville.
According to the article, there’s a trick to determining whether or not the bar is open...
..."If you look down the unnamed alley in Starkville that leads to the back of the police station and you see a light on the building before it, that's how you know The Guest Room is open for business."
The hidden bar can be found underneath Restaurant Tyler. It’s the brain child of Ty Thames and Brian Kelley, who spent four months wielding pick-axes and wheelbarrows to dig out the basement-bar.
Well worth the effort, the end result is one extremely cozy bar.
But the out-of-the-way locale and comfy digs are just the beginning of what the bar has to offer.
With classic drinks as well as inventive concoctions, the cocktail menu is sure to please.
The menu also features late night eats that are practically guaranteed to hit the spot. Small yet varied, the tasty selection includes everything from a cheese plate to homemade pork rinds.
Between the creative cocktails, tasty southern fare, and cozy digs, this hidden spot is worth finding!
Visit The Guest Room at 100 E. Main St. in Starkville. For more information, call (662) 324-1014 or head to the bar’s Facebook page.
