Ahoy, Matey! The Mitten State is famous for our Great Lakes and it’s natural for Michiganders to love the water. Before you drive out to Lake Michigan and enjoy the beach, stop by this ice cream shop in Holland, Michigan for some nautical-themed desserts that will get you in the mood for a day on the water.
Captain Sundae is located on Douglas Avenue in Holland, just a short drive away from the Holland State Park beach.
If you ask any Holland resident where the best place is to get ice cream, they will undoubtedly say Captain Sundae. This quaint shop opened in 1980 and has been serving up delicious desserts ever since.
There is a large list of specialty sundaes offered that are nautical and pirate themed including the peanut butter shipwreck, the nutty captain, and buried treasure.
Back in 2005, Captain Sundae was visited by George W. Bush and featured on national television. The former president got a classic Tommy Turtle sundae and Captain Sundae became a famous spot for ice cream in West Michigan.
The seating area is part of the experience with wood benches surrounded by large trees. There is also a giant wooden ship you can sit in while you enjoy your frozen treat.
Captain Sundae is such a popular spot that two other locations have popped up, one on the south side of Holland and another in Zeeland. A fun mini golf course has also opened at the primary location called Pirates Landing.
Whether you’re in the mood for ice cream or a round of mini golf, Captain Sundae is a must-try when you visit Holland.
