This Charming Restaurant In The Heart Of The Maine Highlands Is A Dream

It's easy to find great food in Maine. Between places like Portland, Bangor and the rest of the more well-known destinations, it can seem as though 10 new culinary masterpieces pop up each season. The real feat is getting off the well-traveled-path and seeing what the rest of Maine has to offer. Trips inland and up north often reveal what Mainers have known for ages - that some of the warmest, welcoming and absolutely delicious restaurants are found where the tourists might not be looking.

The Lakeshore House is located in, what some call, the "Highlands" region of Maine.

Tucked away in tiny Monson, the restaurant and lodge is owned and operated by Rebekah and Charlie Anderson and a wonderful, loyal and local staff.

Inside you'll find a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

But we think the outside is one of the things that makes this place extra special.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the lake throughout their time at the Lakeshore House.

The lodge is a popular overnight stop among those hiking the AT, or people looking to enjoy a piece of the Maine outdoors.

Meals are wonderful, filling and often include specials prepared special for the day.

The Lakeshore does private events as well, which can include something like this - lobster for 15 people out by the lake!

Open mic night is held every Thursday from 6 to 9pm and this summer's festivities will include music every Sunday from 3-6pm along with drink and wing specials.

But, The Lakeshore House is pretty great in the winter as well.

Winter hours are: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 11:30am to 8pm. They're also open on Friday and Saturday from 11:30am to 9pm. In need of a late night bite? You can show up minutes before closing and you'll still be served happily! And, the bar is open late most nights of the week.

If you love winters on a snowmobile, you'll love the numerous trails that begin right outside The Lakeshore.
