Drink Your Way Through Kentucky On The Margarita Marathon

Kentucky offers a "Margarita Marathon" featuring seven top Mexican restaurants known for their margaritas and food.

Kentucky is home to some excellent Mexican restaurants, and nothing pairs better with a platter of enchiladas than a margarita. Whether you enjoy them frozen or on the rocks, these sweet drinks perfectly cool down a spicy meal. We’ve featured some amazing food trips and trails throughout the Bluegrass State (check out our Taco Trail and our Chocolate Shop Road Trip), and we decided it was time to round up some of the best margaritas and Mexican food.

This "Margarita Marathon" is a stretch of places in and around Louisville that could all be visited in a long weekend if you’re dedicated to finding the best in town. Drink your way through Kentucky on the Margarita Marathon and report back with which stop was your favorite.

1. El Mundo

If you're looking for some of the best margaritas in Louisville, it is tough to beat the ones at El Mundo. This local favorite began as a food truck years ago and now serves up authentic Mexican food and award-winning margaritas. Don't miss an opportunity to relax on the patio with this delicious meal. 2. Señor Iguanas

You can take your pick of several Señor Iguanas locations along the Margarita Marathon, as there are five spots around Louisville to chow down on their Mexican menu and wash it down with a variety of margaritas. 3. Taco Luchador

Taco Luchador is another favorite taco joint that has grown and expanded to three locations over the years. They serve up some of Kentucky’s best tacos and their margaritas are just as fresh and flavorful. The restaurant features rotating seasonal varieties in addition to classic styles, and if you want to sit back and sip one on a perfect dining patio, head to the St. Matthews location (pictured above). 4. Ramiro's Cantina

You may have had your first experience with Ramiro's Cantina at their food truck, but they also have a restaurant in Louisville and an express location just across the river. The food alone is worth a visit, but they also offer several flavors of margaritas to accompany it. For more information about this local gem, check out its Facebook page here.

5. Con Huevos

While delicious any time of day, Con Huevos serves up a unique Mexican breakfast, brunch, and lunch, so if you’re looking to get an early start on the Margarita Marathon, consider moving this restaurant to the top of your line-up! The food here is innovative and delicious, and though they don't serve a typical margarita, the creative cocktail list more than makes up for it. 6. La Cocina De Mama

Just outside of Louisville in Shelbyville is La Cocina De Mama. There are two other Kentucky locations with this same name, but the original in Shelbyville offers a quaint dining experience, fresh and authentic food, and a variety of margaritas to go along with it. 7. Gustavo's Mexican Grill

Gustavo's Mexican Grill has three locations in Kentucky; the closest one to Louisville is in Prospect, but you’ll also find locations in LaGrange (pictured above) and Crestwood. This local restaurant has been a favorite in the area for years, and it's easy to see why - the festive atmosphere and fantastic food make dining at Gustavo’s a blast.
