Gothic Libations Abound in Sunny SoCal With an Immersive Experience at The Obscure

A rare whiskey, hidden passages, and tarot cards await at this vibey Los Angeles cocktail experience.

In the heart of Los Angeles’ Arts District, a mysterious distillery transforms tastings into an immersive journey designed to awaken every sense.

Beneath the surface of palm trees and studio lights lies something far more elusive: Welcome to The Obscure. This distillery and cocktail experience is hosted by Fever and is located in LA’s Arts District and offers guided tastings that blend storytelling, live art, and innovative mixology. Plus, purchasing tickets is easy through Fever, and it even offers a discount for tickets sold in pairs.

Upon arrival, I was welcomed onto an outdoor terrace and handed a random tarot card—a whimsical little ritual that kept me entertained while I waited to be summoned inside. I was told to hold onto it, for it's the key to a post-experience snack once I resurface...

Once ushered inside, I stepped into a shadowy dreamscape where colorful lanterns swayed overhead, moss crept along the walls, and a solitary tree presided above the bar. A local artist sat onstage, bringing a blank canvas to life with instinct and imagination, which are available for purchase.

As the romantic music began to swell, I was given a delicate opening drink to awaken my palate. Note: If you abstain from alcohol, the team graciously accommodates with crafted mocktails—just reach out via email ([email protected]) after securing your reservation, and they’ll ensure your experience is just as enjoyable.

Now the show begins.

Currently in its second “season”, host and Master Distiller Thèron welcomed me to his dream. Started in March of 2020, and put on hold due to Covid-19, Thèron and his team spent time reconfiguring to adapt to health and safety measures and were soon able to open in 2021.

Having someone as deeply passionate and articulate as Thèron guide me through the spirit-making process was a rare kind of pleasure. He doesn’t just distill liquor—he curates experience, memory, and sensation, inviting me to consider not just how something tastes, but how it feels on the palate.

My experience began with a guided exploration of each spirit’s origin—its history, its purpose, and why it was chosen for this particular season of tastings. Thèron invited me to engage with the liquor before it ever touched my lips: to smell it, to discover its notes, to let my imagination stir.

Soon, the first cocktail arrives, it was crafted to help me reimagine the spirit I’ve just tasted. It’s not simply a follow-up; it’s a revelation. This drink asked me to reflect to consider how texture, temperature, acidity, and botanicals can transform a single liquor into something layered, expressive, and entirely new.

It’s a moment that deepened my appreciation, not just for the drink itself, but for the sheer artistry behind it. Each element is intentional, and it shows.

Perhaps the most telling of care is held within their second tasting, the “Rites of Fall” Rye. Thèron tells the story of his deepest passion project, acquiring enough American Chestnut wood to make casks to entomb a rye whiskey.

Historically, the American Chestnut was one of the fastest-growing and most resilient trees in North America. Early European settlers quickly recognized its value—strong, straight, and rot-resistant—it became the wood of choice for cabins, fences, and fine furniture. But that abundance led to its near-erasure. Overharvesting was only the beginning; a devastating blight from Asia arrived in the late 1800s and swept through the forests, decimating what remained.

As luck—or fate—would have it, Thèron’s quest for American Chestnut took a turn most unexpectedly. One day, while lamenting the near-impossible search for the antique wood to a colleague, she paused, then asked a simple question: “How much do you need?”

What followed was a revelation. Her family, it turned out, had an American Chestnut tree growing on their land—an extraordinary rarity. Through her generosity and the support of the American Chestnut Foundation, Thèron now harvests wood only from fallen branches, honoring the tree’s legacy without causing it harm and continuing to distill the delicious rye whiskey I had the privilege of enjoying.

At last, just before the final tasting, I was guided to a quiet, candlelit lobby—handed my last spirit as soft shadows danced along the walls. The moment felt intimate and almost meditative. I thought the evening had reached its peak—until an entire wall suddenly gave way, revealing a hidden passage bathed in ethereal blue light.

There, my final cocktail awaited. It wasn’t just a drink—it was a finale. As I stepped into this secret sanctuary, I felt awash in gratitude, filled with newfound knowledge, and deeply moved by the care behind every detail of the experience. The Obscure had given me far more than a tasting—it offered a sensory escape, and a kind of magic that lingers long after the final sip.

And this won’t be my last visit. I’ll be waiting for the next sip in a world that feels like it was made just for those lucky enough to find it.
