V Bar V Heritage Site Has More Petroglyphs Than Anywhere Else In Central Arizona
V-Bar-V Heritage Site in Rimrock, Arizona, features over 1,000 well-preserved petroglyphs created by the Southern Sinagua people.
Ancient sites are certainly not uncommon here in Arizona, but it's rare to find one as extensive and well-preserved as this. V-Bar-V Heritage Site in Rimrock boasts over 1,000 petroglyphs -- more than anywhere else in Central Arizona!
Tucked away in the Coconino National Forest, V-Bar-V Heritage Site has more petroglyphs than anywhere else in the Verde Valley.
Over 1,000 carvings -- some of the best preserved in central Arizona, to be precise -- are spread across 13 panels.
They were created by the Southern Sinagua people between about 1150 and 1400 AD.
All of the petroglyphs at V-Bar-V are Beaver Creek Rock Art Style, which is characteristic of the Southern Sinagua culture.
The images you'll see include animals, geometric symbols, and anthropomorphic creatures.
Just a brief stroll from the parking lot, the petroglyph site is fenced in.
Volunteers provide interpretive tours, and a visitor center, restroom, and bookstore are also located on-site.
Several plaques outline examples of just how knowledgeable the Sinagua people were. Look how accurately they drew the Verde River -- despite having no means to obtain an aerial view.
Visit around noon during the summer to watch their ingenious solar calendar in action.
Also on the property are ruins of the old ranch house. Branded with the V-Bar-V logo on the back, this ornate chimney has remained in surprisingly good condition.
The site is open Friday through Monday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. All cars are required to have either a Red Rock or America the Beautiful pass.
