I don’t know what it is about abandoned buildings that I am so fascinated with. Maybe it’s the stories that are tucked away in hidden corners of the crumbling walls or the fragments of history that still remain. Florida is filled with abandoned places, many of which have been left in ruins but beautifully preserved. One such place is the Hampton Springs Hotel in the small town of Perry. This once-thriving hotel and spa touted a miracle spring, but today, it is left in ruins. Take a look at the history behind this incredible hotel in Florida.
The Hampton Springs Hotel in Florida holds a special place in the hearts of many locals, who may have had relatives frequent the area well over a century ago.
Originally built in the late 1800s, the Hampton Springs Hotel quickly became a popular retreat for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. Its natural mineral springs were believed to possess healing properties, attracting guests from far and wide.
As the story goes, early Taylor County resident Joe Hamilton, was reportedly directed to the local spring by indigenous people of the area in order to heal his ailing wife who suffered from rheumatism.
Over the years, the hotel, which boasted 70 rooms and was two-stories, had undergone renovations and expansions, the last of which was courtesy of J.W. Oglesby in 1915.
Eventually, the luxury hotel was known not just for the healing powers of the sulfur springs and baths, but also included luxurious amenities from meticulously manicured gardens and elaborate fountains to golf and tennis courts, horse stables, and even a casino.
In 1954, tragedy struck when the Hampton Springs Hotel succumbed to a devastating fire, leading to the abandonment of the surrounding area. Despite this loss, remnants of the hotel's grandeur endure, with the pool still receiving the natural flow of spring water, serving as a poignant reminder of its former glory.
Today, visitors can visit the historical site and witness the haunting beauty of the hotel's ruins, but also enjoy the surrounding trails and peaceful moments in nature.
