There's something very endearing and powerful about this small little chapel tucked away in Grand Teton National Park. The simplicity of the chapel in contrast to the majestic scenery around it has the special ability to draw people to it. The Chapel of the Transfiguration in Wyoming sits just inside the southern entrance of Grand Teton National Park.
It's 15 miles from Jackson and located near Moose. After entering Grand Teton National Park at Moose Junction, turn onto the Chapel of Transfiguration Road, and you'll travel 1.1 miles north of Moose Junction.
Before the Chapel was constructed, dude ranchers had to travel long distances over rough roads to reach the nearest church.
(The nearest church was located all the way in Jackson.)
In order to make life (and worship) easier for the townspeople, The Episcopal Chapel of the Transfiguration was built in 1925.
The first service was held on July 26 of that year.
Today, the chapel is a functioning Episcopal Church and is operated by St. John's Episcopal Church in Jackson.
The chapel seats 65 and holds Sunday services from May through September.
An interesting side note is that this chapel was the setting for the movie Spencer's Mountain.
This movie which was filmed in 1963 and featured Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara.
The Chapel of the Transfiguration is utterly breathtaking.
The large window behind the altar serves as a simple understated frame for the majestic beauty of the Teton Mountain Range.
