11 “Hidden Gems” in Virginia We’ve Always Known About but Can’t Stop Visiting

It doesn't matter how many times you visit Virginia's most special places; these gems have so much to cover that no two visits are quite alike.

Do you have a list of favorite places in Virginia? I, for one, am a little guilty of revisiting the same places time and time again simply because they are so exceptional. In my mind, these special places feel like hidden gems, not necessarily because they're off-the-beaten-path, but because they seem to embody what makes our state so special. Here are 11 of our favorite gems to explore—some old, some new, and some that are wonderfully unexpected.

1. Noland Loop Trail

Located near Newport News, Virginia, the Noland Loop Trail is a 4.8-mile loop that's peaceful, well-maintained, and overall a lovely place to connect with nature. It's tucked away within Mariners’ Park, and it's home to an impressive variety of wildlife. The trail is popular; you'll likely share it with other nature enthusiasts, birders, photographers, and families, but it's expansive enough to allow a sense of solitude. Along the way, you'll get to cross over 14 beautiful wooden bridges and enjoy stunning views of the lake.

2. The LOTUS Temple at Yogaville

There's a unique temple nestled in Buckingham, Virginia, that's dedicated to people of all faiths and the diversity of religions. Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville offers classes and workshops throughout the year, and it's also open to those who wish to visit for the day. You'll be invited to participate in daily meditations, vegetarian meals, and Hatha yoga classes. Learn more about visiting Yogaville in Virginia.

3. Concrete Ships at Kiptopeke State Park

Kiptopeke is a stunning Virginia state park located on the Chesapeake Bay's Eastern Shore. It's an obvious choice for birding fans and wildlife enthusiasts, but fewer people realize that it also holds a significant piece of WWII history. During the steel shortage brought on by the war, the US Maritime Commission ordered two dozen concrete ships to be made, two of which made their way to the shores of Normandy, where they eventually sank. Today, nine of these concrete ships form the breakwater at Kiptopeke to protect the beach and pier.

4. Dr. Ho's Humble Pie

Everything is made from scratch at Dr. Ho's Humble Pie in North Garden, Virginia, a celebration of good food and community. The specials here are "Alternative Pizzas," and each is crafted with hyper-local, quality ingredients. Folks absolutely rave about the crust, unexpected toppings, and, of course, the homemade ranch dressing.

5. The Tom Rhodes Tree Carving Trail

Wonderful and whimsical tree carvings can be found along the Tom Rhodes Tree Carving Trail, also known as the Enchanted Forest. Throughout this magical 12-acre forest, there are at least 107 painted carvings to be discovered. See how many you and your crew can find, and prepare to be delighted every step of the way.

6. The Town of Mathews

Situated on Virginia's Middle Peninsula, the town of Mathews offers an abundance of coastal charm. It's close to both the Chesapeake and Mobjack Bays, and its colonial history dates back to 1650 when it was originally called Kingston Parish. Spend time along Main Street for a vibrant, larger-than-life mural, stunning architecture, and the close-knit feel that can only be found in a Virginia small town. While you're there, stop by the White Dog Cafe for some fresh seafood and fine hospitality.

7. Sharp Top at Peaks of Otter

Ready for a climb? We've got one for you, and it's just as steep as the name "Sharp Top" implies. The 3.1-mile hike is rated as hard, challenging hikers to about 1,300 feet in elevation gain. This steep and rocky terrain will be well worth it, though, when you spot the view from the top. It's one of those rare and breathtaking 360-degree views that you'll be thinking about for days after.

8. Cascade Falls

We're headed to Southwest Virginia for one of the region's many stunning natural wonders: Cascade Falls in Pembroke. On this four-mile hiking adventure, you'll encounter plenty of stream crossings before arriving at the picture-perfect 70-foot waterfall. Visit in the summer, and you can enjoy a dip in the pool of water below.

10. Devil's Backbone Basecamp

It's hard to beat the open meadows and rolling hills of Nelson County, Virginia. That's where you'll find Devil's Backbone Basecamp Brewpup & Meadows. Everything on tap is brewed right there on site, and the food is equally impressive. The venue hosts live music, and it's even possible to camp right at this Virginia brewpub.

11. Slover Library

A public library may seem like an odd choice for a list of hidden gems in Virginia, but just wait until you see the stunning architecture and modern layout of this Norfolk landmark. With five stories and an entire level dedicated to children's books, you'll find this to be the perfect spot for a rainy day.

12. Barboursville Vineyards

Virginia has over 300 wineries, and the wine industry has absolutely taken off in the past decade. You may not be able to visit each and every one of them, so we'll recommend a winery with a totally unique feature: historic ruins. Barboursville is a little north of Charlottesville, offering award-winning wines in an unforgettable setting. No trip to this Virginia winery is complete without touring the remains of the 1822 mansion.
