Hiking in Virginia is always a good idea. But when that hike just happens to lead to a waterfall swimming hole, it's nothing short of perfection.

Cascades National Recreation Trail is the one you'll want to take. This wonderfully scenic trail measures about four miles, so be sure to plan accordingly. You'll want proper footwear and a little sun protection, although the majority of the trail is in the shade.

You should note that there is a small parking fee at the trailhead. When last we checked, it was just $3.

Most hikers agree that the trail isn't too strenuous. There are also bathrooms and a picnic area at the beginning of the trail.

Continuing along the trail, you'll love admiring the beauty and peacefulness of the hardwood forests and ancient rock formations.

Before long, you'll hear the rushing water of Little Stony Creek. Look closely and you may even spot some native trout!

The main attraction is, of course, Cascade Falls. Measuring just over 60 feet, this breathtaking waterfall spills into a natural swimming hole. It's chilly but undeniably refreshing after an exhilarating hike.

Just be sure to always take a swimming buddy with you and be aware of water levels at all times.

In the winter, Cascade Falls is just as spectacular, with fewer crowds, although we certainly wouldn't recommend going swimming during the off-season!
