Symbolically, these beautiful blooms represent the dawning of springtime as well as a longstanding friendship with the country of Japan, where the beautiful tree originates. In 1912, the city of Tokyo sent no less than 3,000 cherry trees to Washington D.C. as a gift. Today, visitors marvel at these gorgeous blooms as they surround the capital.

The cherry blossom festival, which began as a small event in 1935, has blossomed itself into a three-week event which is largely considered to be the Nation's biggest springtime festival.
