The myth of Atlantis is one that goes back many generations, one that fascinated us to no end as children. But, unfortunately, it's just that - a myth. What if I told you there was a real-life Atlantis right here in Texas? There are several ghost towns in Texas, but few are underwater ghost towns in Texas. The tiny Central Texas town of Towash was long ago flooded by the Whitney Dam, but some of the town's foundation remains intact underwater. Few people know the story behind this underwater town in Texas, so let's take a closer look.
Although all that remains aboveground are the remnants of an old mill, what lurks underneath the water will astound you.
Towash, Texas isn't just a long-forgotten town that got wiped off the map without leaving a trace - many of its buildings still exist under the lake, as confirmed by countless scuba divers.
It was a thriving agricultural town over a century ago...that is, until a railroad was built 25 miles to the east, leaving no reason for any of its residents to stay.
A sad fate of many towns across the nation as the railroad industry advanced.
The entire population picked up and moved to the nearby town of Whitney in hopes of economic prosperity from the railroad industry. The Whitney Dam was constructed shortly after, flooding Towash, Texas in 1951 until it became nothing more than a passing thought in its former occupants' minds.
If ever find yourself West near Lake Whitney, take a minute to think about the intact town eternally doomed to its watery grave right under the surface of the water.
And if you happen to be a scuba diver, well...explore at your own risk!
