There are plenty of museums across the country dedicated to World War II, but not many hone in on a specific aspect. National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg does just that, and it deserves a lot more recognition. Check it out:
Since 1967, this incredible museum has honored the eight million Americans who served in the war against Japan - over 100,000 of whom sacrificed their lives. It's the only institution in America dedicated solely to WWII's Pacific and Asiatic Theaters.
The museum was inspired by Admiral Nimitz, the man behind the Battle of Midway, which is our Navy's greatest victory to this day. His strategic moves earned him decorations from 14 countries and this six-acre memorial bearing his name.
The George H.W. Bush Gallery alone covers 33,000 square feet. It features 40 media installations, 900 items in climate-controlled cases, and hundreds of photographs.
Two blocks east of the main campus is the Pacific Combat Zone, with macro-artifacts and regularly scheduled battle reenactments. Watching history play out before your very eyes is pretty spectacular.
Get ready to set sail on a mission as you step into the PT 309 Boat exhibit. Watch video displays, listen to oral accounts, and learn about "Oh Frankie," which is the boat on display.
Next door, the TBM exhibit lets you get up close and personal with an Avenger preparing to take off. Launch torpedoes at enemies, defend your ship from attack by manning an anti-aircraft gun, and help the pilot land safety by waving him in.
Over time, the museum has expanded to include a Memorial Courtyard, Plaza of Presidents, and Japanese Garden of Peace. Each exhibit flows flawlessly into the next, telling stories of the U.S. Navy's greatest triumphs in their entirety.
