Gaylord Hotels Have United for DC Summer and Wonder Woman and I Had An Action Packed Adventure at Gaylord Opryland

Spoiler alert: it was super! But a getaway at Gaylord Opryland is always super.

Fed up with the realities of family travel, editor Sarah McCosham had a radical idea in 2024: instead of a big vacation for her family of six, what if she took each of her kids on small, one-on-one adventures? One kid, one carry-on, one adventure.

After visiting Gaylord Opryland for the first time with Pearl last fall, we were hooked and couldn't wait to go back. The ambiance, amenities, nearby attractions (hello, Grand Ole Opry) and Nashville location make for a memorable, enjoyable experience that's simply incomparable. So when we were invited to return to experience DC Summer at Gaylord Opryland, it was an easy and enthusiastic Yes! from us.

Gaylord Hotels Presents DC Summer is a special experience happening at Gaylord Opryland, Gaylord Palms, Gaylord Rockies, and Gaylord Texan. To participate, you'll have to book an overnight visit at one of the above locations, each of which offers its own unique menu of super-charged activities and experiences. Branded games, food, and drink, live entertainment, arts and crafts, and unique activities are all part of DC Summer at Gaylord Hotels. Kids are encouraged to come in costume and parents are encouraged to participate in the fun! Pearl happily packed her Wonder Woman pjs and Halloween costume and wore each outfit during our weekend.

We had an action-packed itinerary that included DC Super Hero Academy Live Show, DC Super Hero Craft Zone, Around We Glow Delta Riverboat Cruise, and Revenge of The Riddler™ Scavenger Hunt. Each of these activities required tickets and had flexible timeframes that made it easy for us to fit in between visits to the waterpark and our Nashville adventures.

Our favorite activity was, hands down, the riverboat cruise. Did you know Gaylord Opryland has its own indoor river? It's a quarter mile long and winds through the Delta Atrium, which is 4.5 acres of pure botanical garden bliss. Riverboat rides are offered daily, but during DC Summer, there's a nighttime option with lights and music that ups the ante. Pearl and I had so much fun that we purchased tickets for a daytime ride, too! Our riverboat guide was super charming and full of fun facts about the buildings and blooms along the route.

We also took advantage of the DC Movie Night and Battle for Justice Light Show, both of which were free for hotel guests. The light show was our favorite—with its indoor gardens and water features, Opryland is such a beautiful hotel and the light show felt like our own personal fireworks.

In addition to the DC Summer activities, Pearl and I also spent a morning at SoundWaves, which is her favorite waterpark ever (which says a lot because we have season tickets to Kings Island and Pearl also visits Indiana Beach each summer with Mom and Dad McCosham). I love the mix of indoor and outdoor attractions and the ample seating—after several waterslides and rounds of water basketball, I was happy to lounge with an ebook while Pearl swam in the wave pool.

Here's the thing: Gaylord Opryland is perfect as is; 10/10, no notes. This is a destination resort with shopping, dining, amazing attractions, and extraordinary service. Everyone at the resort is kind and helpful and genuinely happy to help. This is a place you can go to have an experience that will feel special and memorable and lovely. Gaylord Opryland doesn't need to do anything special because it already is special.

But kids can be BUSY and they like to have options and things to do and what kid doesn't want an excuse to wear their Halloween costume or superhero jammies? DC Summer at Gaylord Hotels is an opportunity to experience each of these extraordinary hotels in a really fun, imaginative, interactive way. Summer is a time for family vacations and memory making, and DC Summer at Gaylord Hotels offers an amazing opportunity for all of the above, and more.
