Your Best Summer Experience in South Carolina Isn’t By Car, It’s on a Scenic Boat Ride

Make your summer epic on the Morris Island Dolphin Sighting and Shelling Trip. This scenic boat ride in SC is tons of fun!

What is your favorite thing to do in the summer? Personally, road trips are always at the top of my list. And while I enjoy the freedom of cruising the highway and anticipating my final destination, some of my best memories were spent on the water. If you ask me, that’s one of the perks of living in a coastal state. Another perk? Access to bucket-list worthy summer experiences. If you live in South Carolina and are searching for an epic adventure, I’ve got the perfect escape for you. Skip the crowds of Myrtle Beach for a private boat trip to the historic Morris Island instead. The best part? Dolphins and shelling! Chances are, you’ll create new unforgettable memories on this family-friendly excursion in South Carolina.

Morris Island, an 840-acre secluded barrier island, is one of the most iconic destinations in Charleston. It’s famously known for its natural beauty, historical significance, and the Morris Island Lighthouse, a 150-foot tower built in 1876. From nearby Folly Beach, it takes about an hour to paddle to the uninhabited island. Sure, a kayak will get you to the oasis, but the best way to get here is by boat.

Luckily, there are several boat tours to choose from. None better than the Dolphin Sighting and Shelling Trip, hosted by Coast Guard Certified Master Captain Billy. Don’t believe me? Here’s what folks are saying: “Oh man, this was so fun. We left with a magical memory and a new friend in Billy. He knew exactly where to go to see dolphins, and we even saw a manatee!! Then he let us free roam the island and pointed us in the right direction for shark teeth and sand dollars. This will be a regular trip for us when we visit.”

Leaving from the Folly River boat landing, the scenic boat ride cruises across the marshy creek to Morris Island. Be prepared for some of the best wildlife viewing in the area. Along the way, witness turtles, river otters, wading birds, and birds of prey. As the name indicates, you’ll also see the lovable Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins swimming near the boat. Having this up-close and personal experience with these graceful creatures in their natural habitat is truly a unique adventure. Make sure you have your camera or your phone ready to capture these magical moments.

Upon arriving at Morris Island, expect an uncrowded, dreamy oasis with lots of treasures. And by treasures, I mean sand dollars, seashells, and if you get lucky, fossils, shark teeth to be exact. This enchanting island paradise, surrounded by the gorgeous waters of the Atlantic, is a beachcomber’s dream come true. It’s one of the best places for fossil hunting and shelling in South Carolina.

I don’t know about you, but I could spend hours collecting seashells; it’s one of my favorite things to do at the beach. After you’ve combed the shores, enjoy a short walk on the island for a better view of the iconic lighthouse. Since the structure is fully surrounded by water, there is no direct access, but you'll still be able to snap some excellent pics of it.

Captain Billy’s boat can fit up to 6 people, so this trip is great for a small family or a group of friends. Even the solo adventurer will have fun too. Kids two and older will have a blast on this epic excursion, but it’s not recommended for the younger kiddos. Since it’s a summer beach trip, be sure to wear sunscreen (lotion only), bring a towel, and wear comfy clothing. Most importantly, prepare to have lots of fun and create new summer memories on this family-friendly excursion in South Carolina.
