It Doesn’t Get Much Creepier Than This Abandoned Church Hidden In South Carolina

Prince Frederick’s Chapel is one of the lesser-known abandoned churches in South Carolina, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth knowing about. Rumored to be haunted and shrouded in legend and lore, the church’s history is an interesting – and creepy – one.

Prince Frederick’s Chapel is located on a desolate road in Plantersville, a small community in Georgetown County.

Once an impressive piece of Gothic-style architecture, the Prince Frederick’s Chapel of today lies in shambles, with only its front façade and bell tower still standing.

Signage posted out front provides a bit of background on the historic chapel, which is actually the second to be built on the site. The original Prince Frederick’s Chapel was built in 1848.

Work on the second church began in 1859 but came to a halt just a year later when Mr. Gunn, a contractor, fell from the church’s roof to his death. Construction eventually resumed and was completed in 1876, fifteen years after the original start date.

During the church’s heyday, a majority of parishioners worked as rice planters along the nearby Pee Dee River.

When rice production declined, parishioners moved away in search of work, abandoning the church and leaving it to decay.

The story of Prince Frederick’s Chapel doesn’t end with its closure, though. According to legend, Mr. Gunn’s ghost haunts the grounds, and he’s not afraid to make his presence known.

Past visitors have reported seeing strange lights in the church’s bell tower, while others have heard disembodied screams coming from the church, which many equate to Mr. Gunn’s spirit re-living his fatal fall.

Mr. Gunn isn’t the only spirit linked to the church, though. Some claim a phantom choir of heavenly voices can be heard in the woods near the church after dark.
