1. Pine Creek Gorge – Watson Township
Drink in simply sensational views of Pine Creek Gorge, the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania from one of the overlooks or hiking trails at Leonard Harrison State Park or Colton Point State Park. This is one of those destinations that’s a must-visit at least once in each season.
2. Kinzua Bridge – Mt. Jewett
Pennsylvania’s all about breathtaking views, and you’ll be treated to some of the best along the Kinzua Bridge Skywalk. The bridge itself was once the highest railroad bridge in the world. However, part of it came crashing down during a 2003 tornado. Kinzua Bridge has since been reimagined as a skywalk with a partial glass floor. Walk to the end of the skywalk, where you can peer through the glass floor at the forest below.
3. Longwood Gardens – Kennett Square
A stroll through Longwood Gardens, especially at Christmastime, promises an enchanting adventure. The 200-acre gardens are brimming with natural beauty, making them a must-visit. Meandering paths pass formal gardens, fountains, forests, and meadows.
4. Yellow Creek State Park – Penn Run
A day at Yellow Creek State Park simply won’t be enough time to explore all this nearly 3,000-acre state park has to offer. From swimming off the sandy shore in the summer to cross-country skiing in the winter, we have no shortage of things to do at this Pennsylvania state park. If you’ve got the time, rent one of the charming yurts for an overnight or two.
5. Gettysburg
Gettysburg consistently earns props as one of the best small towns in America to visit. As perhaps the most historic and haunted town in Pennsylvania, Gettysburg offers something for everyone. Spend your time visiting Gettysburg National Military Park, the Jennie Wade House, and the Seminary Ridge Museum.
6. Trexler Nature Preserve – Schnecksville
Explore Trexler Nature Preserve, a natural wonder in Pennsylvania that spans nearly 1,500 acres. The 18 miles of trails welcome hikers, walkers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Dogs are permitted, but make sure your pup remains on a leash, and you pick up after him.
7. Presque Isle State Park – Erie
Summertime naturally means a visit to Presque Isle State Park, home to some of the best beaches in Pennsylvania. Choose from one of 13 beaches, where you can spend the day lounging on the sandy shore, flying a kite, and cooling off in the lake. Or how about enjoying a day of boating or sailing? The park is also home to hiking trails and picnic tables.
8. Pymatuning State Park – Jamestown
Perhaps best known as where ducks walk on carp, Pymatuning State Park is also a prime destination for viewing bald eagles. At 16,000 acres, Pymatuning State Park is chock full of amenities, including three beaches, a lake for swimming and boating, disc golf, picnic tables, and hiking trails. Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular in the winter.
9. Knoebels – Elysburg
Treat yourself to an old-fashioned day of fun at Knoebels, billed as America’s largest free-admission amusement park. Yep, if you don’t plan on riding, you don’t have to worry about dishing out the big bucks for a day pass. The old-school amusement park features a full lineup of rides, games, and summer’s favorite foods.
