Most People Don’t Know There’s A Little Statue of Liberty Near Portland

When you think of Milwaukie, the sleepy city directly south of Portland, you probably don't think of the one of the most recognizable statues on the planet. Said to be the birthplace of the Bing cherry, Milwaukie is home to just 20,000 residents, is a notable close-in Portland suburb, and is surprisingly home to our very own Statue of Liberty replica.

Settled in 1847, this small town once rivaled Portland and Oregon City in size, but was quickly overtaken by the more port-friendly Portland.

Comprised of nearly 5 square miles of land, the city is in the midst of a downtown revival. Currently a weekly farmers market, along with coffee shops, restaurants and retail space line the downtown streets.

Notable businesses such as Bob's Red Mill, Dave's Killer Bread, and Dark Horse Comics call the city home.

Easily accessible to Portland, the city is connected to the TriMet Orange Line, making it a great place to live with a short commute to Portland.

And of course, like everywhere in the area, there are some stunning views of Mt Hood and the Willamette River.

Just off of McLoughlin Blvd, at a wholesale car dealership parking lot at Roethe Road, sits this amazing replica in Milwaukie. Standing about 60 feet tall, the statue is engraved with "Liberty, Freedom For All Nations, Freedom For All People, Let Freedom Ring!"

Next time you are headed down McLoughlin Boulevard, consider stopping to find this gem on the side of the road. While you won't be right on the water like at the real thing, this impressive replica is totally worth the stop.
