The Historic Church Hiding In Portland That Is An Absolute Work Of Art

Built in 1882, this gothic-style church has been a meeting place for arts and culture for a half a century. Originally built at the Calvary Presbyterian Church, services ceased in 1948, and after changing hands twice, the church became a non-profit center for music and art and has thrived ever since.

The stately church was designed by Portland architect Warren Heywood Williams.

The detailed gorgeous stained glass windows are originals and were produced by the famed local glassmaking powerhouse at Povey Brothers Studio.

By 1948, the church ceased operations, and the building was sold to a baptist church, and then again to First Southern Baptist in 1951.

However, by 1965, things would change and the church was again sitting unused.

Slated for demolition, the Old Church non-profit was started with a mission of preserving the church.

One year and lots of fundraising later, the Old Church group bought the building in 1969 for $95,000.

In 1972, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places under its first name, the Calvary Presbyterian Church.

And ever since, the venue has been a local gathering spot for intimate musical performances.

Major restorations and preservation projects have improved modern conveniences in the building over the years, while still preserving its unique character and history.

Newer improvements have included new lighting and sound systems, as well as a new stage, bar, and marquee.

While the seating capacity of the hall is 300, the gently curved fir pews give the space the intimacy of a smaller venue.

The pipe organ, given to the church at its founding by the Ladd family, remains a focal point in the hall today.

Since 1968, this enchanting location has offered weekly free lunchtime concerts on Wednesdays.

It also plays host to larger touring events and regional concerts, as well as serves as a wedding and event venue.

Featuring a wide range of talent and art, this is one great place to see a show.

From storytelling to music to even yoga, the Old Church is a memorable gathering spot that you will love going to again and again.

The centrally located Old Church is a center for arts and culture, and you should definitely visit.
