If you live in North Carolina, there's likely a running list of the state's best attractions—both natural and manmade—that you'd like to visit at some point in your life. So, why not plan them for 2026?

From the misty peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains—a place I called home for 18 years—to the windswept shores of the Outer Banks, I'm on a mission to uncover the Tar Heel State's hidden gems and iconic landmarks—and discover the best things to do in North Carolina this coming year. 1. Mile High Swinging Bridge - Grandfather Mountain

Have you ever walked across a bridge that's a mile high? Head to Grandfather Mountain and experience the thrill of crossing the Mile High Swinging Bridge, a quintessential North Carolina experience. While you're there, hike the Black Rock Trail for epic views—it's one of the best hikes in North Carolina and perfect for families.

2. Cape Hatteras National Seashore - Outer Banks

Exploring the Cape Hatteras National Seashore has been a dream of mine for years. Wild horses, pristine beaches, and that iconic black and white lighthouse... the Outer Banks are certainly calling. Stay in one of the cozy beach cottages on the cape and explore the little shops and restaurants in the neighborhood.

3. Skylight Inn BBQ - Ayden

No North Carolina barbecue tour is complete without a stop at the acclaimed Skylight Inn. Their whole hog barbecue is cooked over wood coals and served with a vinegar-based sauce that'll have you wanting more. I've been told not to miss their classic tray of chopped pork—it's what they're famous for.

4. North Carolina Arboretum - Asheville

The North Carolina Arboretum is one of the most unique arboretums I've ever visited, which is why it's on my list for 2026. I loved traversing the trails and taking in the breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. And during the holidays, the Winter Lights display with over a million twinkling lights is a must-see.

5. Millpond State Park - Gatesville

Ever kayaked through an ancient cypress swamp? This hidden gem in Gates County is the perfect place to do it. (Who knows, you might even spot an alligator.) Be sure to explore Lassiter Swamp, where the unique "Enchanted Forest" of old-growth cypress trees creates a wonderfully one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

6. Biltmore Estate - Asheville

The Biltmore Estate is truly an experience, and it lives up to the hype. Tour America's largest home, wander through the gardens and grounds, and maybe even enjoy a wine tasting. With vibrant blooms in spring and enchanting Christmas decorations, there's something to see year-round—I highly recommend getting a yearly pass.

7. Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Enjoy Broadway shows, concerts, and comedy acts at Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC), known for its impressive lineup and state-of-the-art sound and lighting. This venue offers an intimate setting with amazing acoustics, no matter where you sit. From May 20 to June 14, 2026, you can see Hamilton.

8. Ferry Rides - Bald Head Island

Ready for some island time? Hop on a ferry and escape to the car-free paradise of Bald Head Island. Explore picture-perfect beaches, hike through maritime forests, and climb the historic Old Baldy lighthouse for gorgeous coastal views.

Whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River is a classic North Carolina adventure that's been on my bucket list forever. Imagine tackling those class II and III rapids, paddling through the scenic Nantahala Gorge, and experiencing the thrill of navigating this iconic river.

If you love peaceful getaways as much as I do, then the Birdhouse of Boone is a wonderful escape. This architecturally designed treehouse sits amongst the trees with long-range views and the soothing sounds of nature. Nothing beats a trip to Lake Norman. Wake up to stunning lake views at the Loft on Lakeshore, a private guesthouse with serene cottage vibes. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a classic, and the Linn Cove Viaduct is one of its most well-known landmarks—one that I've always wanted to see. Take a scenic drive and stop to admire this engineering marvel, which snakes around Grandfather Mountain and offers stunning vistas.

17. Encanto in Concert - Charlotte

Disney fans unite! I can't always whisk off to the theme parks, but this screening of Disney's "Encanto" with live music from the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra is the next best thing. Experience the magic of this lively animated film with the sounds of string, wind, and percussion instruments. The screening will take place March 20 and 21, 2026, at the Belk Theater.

A major 2026 bucket list item for me? Have a snow day and embrace the winter wonderland of Beech Mountain. Whether you're a seasoned skier or a first-timer, there's something for everyone at this North Carolina ski resort. Don't forget the hot cocoa afterward.

19. Wildflower Peeping - Uwharrie National Forest

Springtime in the Uwharrie National Forest is a sight to behold. Hike parts of the Uwharrie Trail to admire the colorful wildflowers, including rare species like the Schweinitz's sunflower. Shades of purple, pink, yellow, and white cover the fields of this beautiful landscape, making it one of the prettiest hikes in North Carolina.

20. Ziplining Adventure at the Gorge - Saluda

Ready to fly through the forest canopy? Feel the thrill of ziplining at The Gorge in Saluda, known for being one of the steepest and fastest ziplines in the U.S.—it's a great way to beat the summer heat. The Gorge has 11 ziplines spanning 1.25 miles and a breathtaking sky bridge to take in the views.

21. Pumpkin and Apple Picking - Hendersonville

Celebrate the autumn harvest with a trip to an apple orchard in Hendersonville. I usually go to Grandad's Apples, but Justus Orchard is on my radar for their delicious apple cider slushies. You can pick your own apples, enjoy some cider donuts, and even find the perfect pumpkin for carving—something I do every year. Most pumpkin patches open in mid-September, and apple orchards in late August.

Make sure you hit the Ecusta Trail, a 6-mile paved, flat biking trail with stops at breweries, farms, restaurants, and more for all of the fall vibes. You can easily rent a bike nearby if needed.

22. Charlotte Motor Speedway - Charlotte

I've always wanted to experience the thrill of NASCAR racing, and Charlotte Motor Speedway is calling my name. It doesn't get more North Carolina than channeling your inner Dale Earnhardt and catching a race, taking a tour of the track, or even trying your hand at driving a race car. It's definitely on my bucket list as one of the most unique things to do in 2026.

You'll learn about everything from Native American heritage to the Civil War and the battleships that are still parked along the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, North Carolina. Delve into the spooky side of New Bern with The Original Ghost Tour of Haunted New Bern. This 90-minute walking tour takes you to the city's most actively haunted homes and burial grounds, where you'll hear chilling tales of ghostly encounters.
