It's hard to go anywhere in Hendersonville, North Carolina, without passing an apple farm. The beautiful rows of apple trees are easily seen from the small town's two-lane roads. Henderson County grows more apples than any other county in the state. I recently visited Justus Orchard, an apple orchard in Hendersonville, and can't wait to go back.
Justus Orchard is a fifth-generation family apple farm in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
About two dozen varieties of apples are grown on the farm. Visitors can pick apples or buy already picked fruit in the farm store.
When we pulled into the gravel lot at Justus Orchard, I was impressed by all it offered guests.
There's a farm store, playground, jump pad, and fields of beautiful farm produce. The playground had areas for younger and older kids and shaded tables nearby, perfect for parents.
I walked through the farm store and admired the fresh fruit for sale. In late July, it had apples and peaches.
The very friendly employee explained that apples would be ready for visitors to pick in about a week. I picked up some fruit and later, when I ate it, thought it tasted fresh and delicious.
Justus Orchard also grows and sells blackberries in the summer.
Their availability during the growing season depends on the weather, and none were available when I visited.
A counter served apple doughnuts, apple fritters, and fried apple pies.
I ordered a fried apple pie. The crust around the sweet apple filling was crisp and flakey—I loved every bite!
I walked down the hill to the sunflower field.
I admired the big blooms and appreciated that Justus Orchard carefully grows so many high-quality farm products. Aren't the sunflowers spectacular?
