5 Easy Day Trips You Can Take From Charlotte, My Favorite Included
Need a break from Charlotte for the day? Here are 5 destinations you can add to your day trip itinerary.
Visiting Charlotte, North Carolina, offers a wonderful mix of urban energy and Southern charm, but if you happen to live there, you might need a quick getaway to shake things up. Perhaps you're craving vacation variety, like fresh mountain air, small-town vibes, or waterfront views. There are plenty of amazing day trips just a short drive from the Queen City. Here are five easy and rewarding destinations, including my absolute favorite, which I always recommend first.
1. Asheville
Asheville hasn't had the easiest time of things, especially after hurricane damage caused severe destruction throughout the city. But that just means the area needs tourism and attention now more than ever. A perfect day trip from Charlotte, at around 2 hours, you'll be immersed in fresh mountain air and a dreamy, artsy landscape. You can explore the rebuilt River Arts District, take a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, or just stroll downtown for unique shops and restaurants.
2. Lake Lure
Lake Lure might sound familiar—it was the filming location for Dirty Dancing! But even if you're not reenacting dance scenes on the lakefront, this picturesque spot offers a relaxing getaway. You can rent a kayak, hike up to Chimney Rock (recently re-opened) for panoramic views, or simply enjoy a picnic by the water. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and every view looks like a postcard. Bonus: The drive out there is incredibly scenic, especially in the fall.
Note: Lake Lure experienced extensive damage from Hurricane Helene and the lake won't be re-open to tourists until spring/summer 2026.
3. Uwharrie National Forest
If you’re craving a day (or night) in the woods, Uwharrie National Forest is a perfect getaway for you. Less crowded than the big mountain parks, Uwharrie offers scenic trails, peaceful lakes, and off-road adventure areas if you're into four-by-four fun. Hiking, kayaking, horseback riding—you name it. It’s rugged, it’s wild, and it’s surprisingly close to Charlotte at less than 90 minutes away. Pack a picnic, lace up your boots, and enjoy the scenery.
4. Greenville, South Carolina
Don’t sleep on Greenville just because you have to cross state lines—it’s one of the Southeast’s most underrated cities. The heart of downtown is beautifully walkable and packed with shops, coffee spots, and restaurants. Falls Park on the Reedy is the star attraction, with a gorgeous waterfall right in the middle of town and a suspension bridge that gives you the best view. If you’re into biking, hop on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Greenville is stylish, scenic, and has just the right mix of city buzz and small-town ease.
5. Reed Gold Mine
Just a short drive from Charlotte in Midland, North Carolina, Reed Gold Mine offers a fascinating glimpse into America's gold mining history. In 1799, 12-year-old Conrad Reed discovered a 17-pound gold nugget in Little Meadow Creek, marking the first documented gold find in the United States. Today, visitors can explore restored underground mine tunnels, view exhibits showcasing historic mining equipment, and even try their hand at gold panning from April through October. The site also features walking trails and a museum that delves into the rich history of gold mining in the region.
