There’s So Much More Than Art In New York’s Nassau County Museum Of Art

Nassau County Museum of Art in New York offers a unique blend of traditional art, outdoor sculptures, nature trails, and a restored mansion.

When you think of an art museum, your mind may go to a stuffy, prim place for intellectuals and art snobs. One place that definitely doesn't fit that mold is the Nassau County Museum of Art in New York. The park consists of 145 acres and not only contains traditional paintings and sculptures like you might expect at an art museum, but also has miles of trails, an arboretum, a lake, and a beautifully restored mansion.

The Nassau County Museum of Art is located is about 20 miles east of New York City in Roslyn Harbor. The main building that houses artwork is a three-story Georgian mansion.

The sculpture park is one of the largest outdoor sculpture parks in the northeast United States. Over 40 sculptures by 30 different artists reside on the property.

Sculptures are throughout the museum's acreage, and range from a variety of artistic eras. The oldest dates back to 1918, but newer sculptures were made in just the last few years.

With so much space, the museum's grounds are extremely tranquil. There is a massive collection of native plants and trees in the area.

The pond and trees that surround it provide an example of a living art collection that inspires poets and painters alike.

There are nine different guided nature trails located on the property. They vary in length and difficulty, and total about six miles altogether. The area is popular with local wildlife, and you never know what kind of critters you might run into!

Of course, inside the museum there's also plenty of traditional artwork. The museum houses many permanent pieces and also regularly hosts an ever-changing array of exhibits.
