The Dark History of This Haunted Lighthouse Near Buffalo Is Seriously Creepy

If you're a intrigued by the supernatural, Buffalo certainly has several places for sightings! One of the most historically rich locations to encounter ghost activity is located south of the city in Dunkirk at the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse. Read on to see what makes the history of this haunted lighthouse so dark – and to get a glimpse of what you can expect on your next visit!

The Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse is located at 1 Lighthouse Point Drive in Dunkirk, NY.

The lighthouse was originally constructed in 1827.

Eventually, the building was reconstructed in 1875 to include a 61-foot stone tower and a Victorian-style keeper's house, which still stand to this day.

The Lighthouse grounds are shared with a Veterans Museum that houses a large collection of military artifacts.

The tower still has its original Fresnel lens, which was imported from France and is visible for 27 miles out on Lake Erie.

While the lighthouse is certainly beautiful, tales of the structures' past can get a bit dark.

Some say the paranormal activity at the lighthouse stems from the many military artifacts housed at the museum.

It wouldn't be surprising, as the first shots fired during the War of 1812 occurred near the west bank of the historical lighthouse and the first soldier killed in the Civil War was a Dunkirk native.

Others believe the ghosts haunting the lighthouse are keepers who just never left.

After seeing the beauty of the lighthouse firsthand, you'll understand why the lighthouse keepers might have wanted to take up a permanent residency here!

What should you expect during your visit?

Many people visit the lighthouse and don't notice anything out of the ordinary; however, others have reported hearing strange footsteps climbing the tower stairs and in the keeper's house, as well as voices talking and humming... when nobody else (who is living, at least) is in the buildings.

Those interested in taking ghost tours of the historical lighthouse can make reservations on select dates.

The full list of ghost tour events can be found on the Dunkirk Lighthouse website.

Who knows - you just might make some new "friends..."

...from the afterlife, that is. Just proceed with caution – some people have reported feeling "people" reaching out to touch them during their tours! Creepy!
