Get A Taste Of The Wild West In New York At The Gerry Rodeo, The Oldest Rodeo East Of The Missippi

You may feel like New York is pretty far from the old wild west. After all, we're right on the eastern coast and in many of our cities, you may notice a distinct lack of cowboy hats. But did you know that New York is home to the oldest consectively-running rodeo east of the Mississippi River? The little town of Gerry in Chautauqua County is small on population, with only about 2,000 residents. What they lack in size, they more than make up for in fun with their annual rodeo!

The rodeo is held annually in early August. This year's dates are August 4-7 and it's looking to be the best one yet!

An 18-foot stadium television screen is being added so that visitors can get a better look at the action.

There are a variety of events at the rodeo. Bronc riding, bull riding, roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing competitions are held. Of course, there are rodeo clowns as well!

More than 200 competitors compete for $45,000 in prizes. This is one of only 12 events nationally that allow cowboys to qualify for a massive $2 million rodeo in Texas, so needless to say, it's a big deal!

Proceeds from the rodeo go to fund the town's volunteer fire department. The rodeo has been held each year since 1945.

A few of the fire department's vehicles are on display at the rodeo each year, including a 1921 Ford Model T.

The rodeo is a big event in this small town; vendors set up on the midway and there's legendary barbecue for sale. Wednesday and Saturday night will have fireworks.
