Most People Don’t Know That These 9 Castles Are Hiding In New Jersey

New Jersey is one of the oldest states in the United States and has heaps of history. Our lands were settled back in the 1600's and by the 1800's many men had made their fortunes. What better way to show off their vast wealth than with a castle? There are several century old castles hidden throughout the state along with more modern castles that are still just as unique. Here are a few of our favorites.

1. Lambert Castle, Paterson

Lambert Castle is located within the beautiful Garret Mountain Reservation. It is home to a museum and the archives of the Passaic County Historical Society. Built in 1892 and formerly called Belle Vista, the castle was originally the private residence of a prominent silk mill owner.

2. Iviswold Castle, Rutherford

This castle home was built in 1869 and expanded in 1887. A private residence for many years, the magnificent structure is now a part of the Felician University Campus.

3. Steven's Castle Gate, Hoboken

Steven's Castle was built in 1854 and demolished in 1959. Still, the gate house remains, welcoming students to the Steven's Institute of Technology.

4. Kip's Castle, Montclair

Kip's Castle sits on the ridge of First Mountain, between Verona and Montclair. The 9000 square foot castle was built in the early 1900's to replicate a medieval Norman castle. It has served many purposes over the years, including being a monastery, but the castle is now owned by the Essex County Parks System.

5. Breidenhart Castle, Moorestown

Built in 1894 for inventor Samuel Leeds Allen, the property is now a Lutheran home for seniors.

6. Pax Amicus Castle Theatre, Budd Lake

Built in the 1940's, this castle originally served as a synagogue. In 1977, the building was transformed into the castle we know and love today. Performances are quite affordable and a wide variety of shows are offered throughout the year.

7. Gingerbread Castle, Hamburg

Gingerbread Castle was a popular fairy-tale attraction from the 1930's to the 1980's. It has since been abandoned but local residents are fighting to have it restored to its former glory.

8. Stronghold Castle, Bernardsville

If you'd like to own a piece of history, this 1886 castle estate is currently for sale. Owned by fashion designer Marc Ecko, the home was once the residence of Charlotte Drayton, the daughter of William Astor. Years later the home belonged to Senator John F. Dryden and then became part of the Gill St. Bernard's school. A private residence since 1995, the home is listed for $11.8 million.

9. Starbucks Castle, Glen Rock

If we can't afford to live in a castle, we can at least dine in one. The interior is impeccably designed and there is swanky circular seating in the "tower".
