The Ultimate Fall Adventure Awaits With These 3 Haunted Places in New Hampshire

Looking to experience a bit of haunted fun on your next New Hampshire getaway? Put these three spooky spots on your fall adventure list.

Do you have an autumn getaway in the works? The Granite State is definitely the place to visit this time of year. Most visitors come to the region to leaf-peep, hike, and take advantage of our spectacular scenery. But this time of year is also a great time to experience some spooky fun. If you are looking for a few local creepy adventures, be sure to check out my favorite haunted places in New Hampshire.

1. The Omni Mount Washington Resort - Bretton Woods, NH

I can’t think of a better place for a New Hampshire fall getaway than the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods. Years ago, I had the privilege of staying here for a weekend, and let me tell you that this luxury White Mountain retreat is absolutely magnificent. Autumn is the prettiest season in these parts of the woods, and it is also an ideal time for a spooky stay. The Mount Washington is considered to be one of the most haunted places in New Hampshire, and an overnight here might have you seeing the ghost of Carolyn Foster Stickney, the wife of the hotel’s builder. Her spirit has been known to roam the resort’s hallways and mysteriously move objects around the guestrooms. However, your best bet at catching a glimpse of Caroline is to book a stay at the Mount Washington Resort's room #314, where you may just wake up and see her spirit sitting at your bedside.

2. The Betty & Barney Hill Abduction Site - Lincoln, NH

While you are visiting the White Mountains, be sure to stop at one of the strangest roadside attractions in the state: the Betty and Barney Hill marker. The Hills were an ordinary couple from Portsmouth who became known for their part in an incident that took place in 1961. On the night of September 19, they were driving down the southbound lane of Route 3 in Lincoln when they began to be followed by a bright figure in the sky. The cigar-shaped object eventually overtook the vehicle, and both Barney and Betty lost consciousness. The couple later underwent hypnosis and revealed that aliens in a UFO had abducted them. The encounter is now referred to as the “Betty and Barney Hill Incident” and is regarded as the country's first widely-reported UFO abduction report. The roadside plaque commemorating this eerie experience is located on Route 3 in Lincoln near the Indian Head Resort. Be sure to stop by the nearby Notch Express gas station and check out the unique exhibit about the incident.

3. Screemfest - Salem, NH

Canobie Lake Park is one of my favorite places for fun in New Hampshire. As fall begins, I am counting down the days until the opening of Screemfest, the park’s annual seasonal transformation into a haunted land of spooky amusements and terrifying fun. Bring on the monsters, haunted houses, adventure rides, and live entertainment. I am ready for an exciting night of chills and thrills! Screemfest will also be hosting some less-scary, kid-friendly amusements for little ones, so there is something for everyone to enjoy here this season.
