We love a good ghost story any time of year and that's why we love that New Hampshire has so many of them! Of course, that should come as no surprise in a state that was founded in 1776, making it one of the oldest "official" states in the country. If you enjoy the spookier side of the state as much as we do consider a trip to Alton to visit one of the most haunted buildings around.
Even if you've never been to Alton, located in Belknap County, you've probably seen photos. The area is home to Mount Major, one of the most beautiful peaks (and views!) anywhere in the state.
And if you make your way to the main part of town and you'll be met with an adorably quintessential New Hampshire town, complete with historic buildings and a few local shops.
There's a lot to see here, but today we're focused on the Alton Town Hall and some of the stories we've heard about it being the most haunted place in New Hampshire.
The building dates back to 1894 when it was built for a paltry (by today's standards!) $15,000. That makes it well over 100 years old. That's a lot of time for spirits to accumulate! People who have spent time in the Town Hall building have reported hearing strange footsteps when nobody else is in the building.
In addition to mysterious footsteps, late night employees and guards have listened to voices coming from corridors. Perhaps creepiest is the story one person told of hearing furniture move above them despite being alone in the building. Upon investigating, they found that the chairs from the courtroom had been moved out into the hallway and arranged in a single-file line!
Though it often is overlooked as a haunted spot in the state, we think Alton Town Hall qualifies as being one of the spookiest.
Alton Town Hall is operational and open for official business from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. We recommend you don't go visiting just to find a ghost, but it is a lovely history piece of the town's history to enjoy from the outside. Have you experienced any creepy occurrences while inside? We'd love to hear your story in the comments!
