We have created an itinerary for the perfect winter weekend in Wildwood, Missouri. This town at the far western edge of St. Louis County offers a mix of unexpected thrills and tranquil outdoor escapes. Why Wildwood? With its natural beauty, picturesque trails, and -- surprise! -- very own ski resort, it’s the perfect spot for a winter adventure in Missouri.

First Stop: Hidden Valley Ski Resort

If I had not grown up in the area, I'd be skeptical about a ski resort in a state with no real mountains (our Ozark Mountains max out at 1,772 feet above sea level).  But Hidden Valley has been a local favorite since 1982, and it’s managed by a company that also operates major ski resorts across the United States, so you know this man-made ski slope is the real deal. Whether you're a seasoned skier or someone who'll wobble down the bunny slopes, this is your spot for snowy fun.

Never skied? Don’t worry. You can book group or private lessons to get the hang of it, and the resort rents out all the gear you’ll need. Bonus: If you book online, you’ll save time (plus a few bucks) and avoid lines. A few packing tips: bring moisture-wicking layers, sunglasses or goggles, sunscreen (because, yes, you can still get sunburned in the snow), and gloves. Pro tip: Weekends and holidays can get crowded, so aim for a weekday if you want the slopes to yourself.

Not quite ready to strap into skis or a snowboard? No problem. Hidden Valley’s Polar Plunge Tubing Hill has you covered. It’s Missouri’s biggest snow tubing run, and it’s just as fun (and fewer bruises, maybe). As long as you’re 42” tall, you just get to show up and glide down tubing lanes in your two-hour time slot. Grab a snack from the Tubing Cafe between runs and warm up by the outdoor fire pit. If you're really feeling the vibe, stick around for night tubing or skiing because why not extend the fun into the evening? You can grab a full meal at the cafeteria-style restaurant or a craft cocktail at the full-service bar.

There is a saying in Missouri: If you don’t like the weather, just wait! While Hidden Valley does a great job of maintaining the slopes amidst constant weather changes, it does affect the season start date and operating hours. Just check the Hidden Valley's website or Facebook page before you go.

Second Stop: Trail Time

After all that adrenaline, you might need a breather. The City of Wildwood’s nearly 40 miles of trails are perfect for slowing things down. Eighteen of those miles are paved, offering an easy walk through stunning Missouri bluffs and across charming wooden bridges.

And if you want to keep your adventure going, head to Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park, a 2,500-acre treasure where city trails meet rugged wilderness. Swing by the River Hills Visitor Center to check out interactive displays of local wildlife or grab a keepsake from the Missouri-themed gift shop.

Wrap It Up: Shop and Dine Local

No weekend trip is complete without supporting small businesses, and Wildwood, Missouri, has plenty of gems. Whether you’re browsing cozy boutique shops, picking out plants at local nurseries, or grabbing a bite at Big Chief Roadhouse, the town’s friendly, small-town charm shines year-round.

What do you think? Will Wildwood make it on your list as a perfect weekend town in Missouri? If you do decide to make a weekend out of it, stay in The Wildwood Hotel and reserve one of the king suites with a jetted tub to soothe your muscles after a trip down the slopes.
