There’s No Place Like My Hometown of Jefferson City for the Holidays
Jefferson City glows during the holidays with festive lights, historic charm, and seasonal events. Celebrate the season where tradition meets hometown warmth.
I was born in Jefferson City, Missouri (once considered the most beautiful small town in the U.S.), but I don’t remember much about it. I was so young when my family moved away that I didn’t get the chance to experience the city’s holiday magic. But I can tell you, if I had, I’m sure those memories would be brighter than the Christmas lights that decorate this town. If you visit Jefferson City during the holidays, you’ll see exactly what I mean: there’s something about this place that makes the season feel extra special.
The Governor’s Mansion during the holidays is like something out of a movie. On the Holiday Tours, you get to walk through beautiful rooms filled with festive decorations that look straight out of a 1940s Christmas special. There are trees glowing with lights, wreaths on every door, and garlands that stretch over banisters like something you’d see in a Hallmark movie. Imagine Bing Crosby singing “White Christmas” while you take it all in. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a winter wonderland, even if you’re just there for a tour.
If you’re a fan of holiday magic, downtown Jefferson City is like a scene out of a Christmas movie, but better... because it’s real. Start by visiting the Capital City Festival of Lights. This drive-thru display is filled with glowing reindeer, snowmen, and thousands of twinkling lights. It’s like you’re driving through a giant holiday card, and you get to be part of it. Pop on some old-school Christmas tunes—think Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole—and you’ve got the perfect holiday evening.

Downtown also hosts the Living Windows event, which is like walking through a snow globe. Storefronts transform into holiday scenes that look like something out of "A Christmas Carol." Victorian carolers, playful elves, and even a few dancing snowflakes make the whole town feel like it’s stepped out of a holiday classic.
You won't want to miss the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, either. Picture this: families in scarves, kids jumping up and down with excitement, and everyone watching as the big tree lights up with thousands of glowing lights. It’s simple but perfect. When the tree sparkles to life, you’ll feel like you’ve just found the heart of the holiday season.
And if you’re looking for more holiday magic, the Capitol Caroling event at the Missouri State Capitol is a must. With the JCHS choir and band performing festive classics, it’s the perfect way to keep the cheer going!
While the holidays are the highlight, Jefferson City is full of cool things to do all year long. If you’re into history, the Missouri State Capitol is a must-see. It’s not just a building—it’s a piece of history, filled with murals and stories about the state that’ll make you feel like you’re walking through time. And at the holidays, it's home to Capitol Caroling - which the community has been making happen for over 80 years!
And for a change of pace, the Katy Trail is perfect for a winter walk along the Missouri River. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and a great way to clear your head after a busy day of holiday shopping. If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the Missouri State Penitentiary, which has its own fascinating history (and yes, it’s a little spooky—but in a good way).
Even though I moved away from Jefferson City when I was young, it’s always stuck with me. The stories of the Missouri town’s holiday celebrations are a big reason for that. There’s something about the way Jefferson City embraces the season that makes it feel like a warm hug, whether you’re strolling downtown or watching the Christmas tree light up.
So, if you’re looking for a place to make new memories this holiday season, why not make Jefferson City your destination? With lights, music, and more than enough holiday cheer, it’s the kind of place that’ll leave you feeling a little more connected to the magic of the season. And, there are plenty of magical holiday vacation rentals, like this charming, pet-friendly VRBO in Jefferson City!
