My Favorite Park in Mississippi Is a Little-Known Paradise for Biking
Plan a trip to Gautier to ride through scenic coastal wetlands on the best MTB trails in Mississippi.
Tishomingo State Park is not only the largest state park in Mississippi, but it’s also the best. Tucked in the foothills of the Appalachians, thousands of folks visit the park to explore its unique terrain. Plus, the iconic 200-foot-long swinging bridge across Bear Creek is one of the most Instagrammable spots in the state. Obviously, the park is worth a trip, and if you have never been, I highly recommend it. But if you’re like me and like a more low-key or peaceful destination, then I’ve got the perfect spot for you. Shepard State Park in Gautier is on my list of top parks in the state to visit. The best part? If you’re a mountain biker, you’ll love this little-known Mississippi state park, too.
Since Shepard State Park is located near the Gulf, it’s easily accessible from Biloxi and just a 10-minute drive from Pascagoula. In my opinion, the 395-acre playground is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Mississippi. The park features a disc golf course, easy hiking and walking paths, an archery range, a boat ramp, playgrounds, picnic areas, recreational fields, and it’s home to Mississippi’s longest Marshwalk along Lamotte Bayou.
Additionally, it’s the only Mississippi state park with a dog park, which means your furry bestie will have fun here, too. With all these amenities, plus great camping facilities and fishing opportunities, this hidden gem park is an excellent choice for a weekend getaway. Honestly, I’m surprised more folks don’t come to visit.
What might surprise you is that this lesser-known state park is a paradise for mountain bike enthusiasts. It has even hosted MTB events over the years. There are several miles of trails that wind through the park's vast ecosystem. Bring your bike to ride through wetlands, woodlands, across footbridges, and past flowing streams.
The most popular biking trail is the five-mile Shepard State Park BOP Loop. Fun Fact: Bentonville, Arkansas, is the Mountain Biking Capital of the world. However, as biking has gained popularity, more and more Mississippians are exploring these MTB trails. Carve out about 90 minutes to complete this ride, but for extra adventure, you can easily combine the trail with others in the network. The park boasts eight miles of trails, so there is plenty of space to cover.
The ride through the park is peaceful and scenic, and you will enjoy it. The shaded woodland areas are great spots to take a break. Oh, did I mention, you might have the trails to yourself? You can’t ask for more than that! Be on the lookout for the cute little turtles in the area. Other reptiles and wildlife will be present, including gators, armadillos, snakes, deer, and several bird species.
Though not paved, most of the routes at Shephard are beginner and kid-friendly, so bring them along for this adventure. Dogs are welcome, too, but they must remain on their leash. Since the park is located within coastal wetlands, expect muddy areas and occasional flooding, especially after a good rain. To avoid any unforeseen issues, I’d suggest downloading AllTrails+ to access updated trail conditions.
So, whether you’re a professional mountain biker or a casual rider (like me), or you’re simply in search of a fun family-friendly destination, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Shephard State Park. This little-known Mississippi state park packs a mighty punch.
Please note: there is a $5 fee per vehicle to enter the park, or you can opt for the annual pass if you plan on visiting throughout the year. Visit the Shephard State Park website to learn more.
