Now that holiday season is here, it's time to cozy up and revel in the nostalgia that inevitably comes with this time of year. Memories of baking cookies and ripping open presents on Christmas morning are cherished by many across the country and world, but what about the traditions specific to Minnesota? Many of us have weird and wacky holiday traditions that only Minnesotans would get. Here are 8 of our favorites:
1. Making — and eating — lefse.
Because so many Minnesotans have a Norwegian heritage, it makes sense that many families enjoy making lefse together. For many, it's a Christmas tradition that they've done their whole lives. The only thing more fun than making it is eating it.
2. Taking in the magic of Bentleyville.
Bentleyville hasn't been around for too long, but it's already one of the most beloved holiday traditions in Minnesota. And really, what's more wacky than walking around in the cold to admire a light display? It doesn't get more Minnesotan than that.
3. Hiding a pickle in the Christmas tree.
No one is quite sure where this tradition comes from. Some say it's an old German tradition, but this is likely just a story. Regardless, many Minnesotans partake in this quirky Christmas activity. The person who finds the pickle gets a gift —
what could be more fun than that?
4. Getting into the spirit of the season at the Holidazzle Parade.
Holidazzle has been a Minnesota tradition for ages, and it remains one of the best events in Minneapolis each year. From the parade to the lights to the fireworks, it's a magical experience that you can't beat. The fact that it takes place outdoors is neither here nor there for Minnesotans. In fact, we prefer it that way. We're not about to stay inside all winter long.
5. Visiting ice castles.
Though St. Paul's winter carnival won't be building another ice palace this year, there have been 36 excellent ones in years past. These impressive displays delight Minnesotans and out-of-towners alike. In more recent years, Stillwater has hosted a gorgeous ice castle that proved to be just as popular as the St. Paul version. Either way, it's a great tradition. What else are we going to do with all that ice and snow?
6. Ordering a seasonal drink from Caribou.
Whether you want a mint mocha or a fa la latte, this Minnesota coffee chain is the place to go for a warm drink during the winter. Sure, Starbucks has its share of great seasonal drinks, too, but there's nothing quite like the hometown favorite.
7. Making dessert bars.
What's more Minnesotan than making a pan of bars to share with your friends and family? Whether they're simple chocolate chip or something a little more fancy, people go crazy over bars. The variety of recipes is endless, and people are always trying new ones. Making and eating this Minnesota favorite is a great way to bond with loved ones during the holidays.
8. Hunting the Mall of America for that perfect gift.
Okay, it's not so weird to go shopping for gifts at a mall. But it gets a little strange when it's the Mall of America. Many Minnesotans who shop for gifts here each year do so for the festive atmosphere and for the convenience of finding everything you need in one place. A visit to the mall during the Christmas season is pretty Minnesotan indeed.
