The Story Behind This Evil Place In Maine Will Make Your Blood Turn Cold
Bucksport, Maine, is home to two cemeteries with eerie histories involving a cursed tombstone and an unsolved murder.
There are towns all over Maine that come with a certain feeling. Some are adorable and quaint, perfect for a summer afternoon outside. Others are great in the winter, sparkling with holiday lights and extra magical in the snow. But some have a history that just feels a bit scary. Bucksport is one of them.
Sitting here in Bucksport are two cemeteries - both of which fill us with a sense of dread.
You might know the story of Buck Cemetery, which is where you’ll find the tomb of Colonel Buck.
Legend has it that this tombstone is cursed and it’s hard not to agree once you’ve heard the story. It’s said that Colonel Buck was the father of a child with a woman that was not his wife. Not wanting to face the consequences, he had the woman burned. Knowing she was to be killed, she gave Buck a stern warning: Kill her and he would bear the mark of this murder forever.
During the fire, her leg is said to have detached, falling out of the fire completely. Her son, seeing this awful sight, ran to the leg to save it.
Many decades later, a stain in the shape of a leg eerily appeared on the tombstone. While it’s been replaced many times, this same foot image reappears over and over again.
The other piece of evil history involves a woman named Sarah Ware. in 1898, Ware went missing during a solo walk at night.
Her body was found a few weeks later, decomposing in a field. Her head had been almost completely detached. Suspects were named, but the authorities were never able to pin down the actual perpetrator.
Eventually, she was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Well, most of her was buried. Her head was kept for over 100 years to be used as evidence in this unsolved case. Years later, her head was indeed buried. But nobody knows for sure if the head is actually with the body.
Today, there’s a small headstone where people believe the body lies. You can visit both of these cemeteries on a trip to Bucksport.
Oak Hill Cemetery is located at 34 Middle Street in Bucksport. Buck Cemetery is easily found, though there’s no official address.
