Chimpanzees and humans aren’t all that different. Our similarities are the primary reason why they’ve been used for biomedical research for so many years. At Chimp Haven, retired chimpanzees can live out their golden years on a beautiful 200-acre facility where they’re treated like the royalty that they are. Let’s take a closer look.
Tucked away in the forests of northeastern Louisiana, Chimp Haven offers a new beginning to retired chimpanzees that were used for entertainment and biomedical research.
The 200-acre facility is home to over 300 chimps that get to live out their days enjoying all the things they would in the wild.
The sanctuary was founded in 1995 and is the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world. Not only do they have more than 300 chimps living here now, but there are nearly 100 more in research facilities around the country that are awaiting a home here.
The chimps roam freely in their home, and they can choose how they want to spend their day.
Each chimpanzee has its own unique personality, likes, and dislikes, just like humans. Some prefer long walks along the tree line…
…some prefer to dress for the occasion...
..and some like to climb to the top of a tree with their best friend.
While others just like to lounge around and soak in that beautiful sunlight.
So whether they want to stop and smell the flowers...
...or eat them.
The choice is theirs!
While Chimp Haven is not open to the public, they do feature "Discovery Days" throughout the year, where you can see the chimps in their habitat and learn more about their care.
Chimp Haven is a non-profit organization that receives government funding to help care for these beauties, but it only covers so much.
They rely on the generous support of individuals to keep the sanctuary running and hopefully, one day, expand so that even more chimpanzees can live that sweet chimp life.
If you'd like to make a donation to Chimp Haven or learn more, be sure to check out its website and give them a follow on Facebook.

While you're in the area, be sure to hike the nearby Monkey Trail. This beautiful trail features roughly 10 miles of beautiful forests to explore, and you'll be able to hear the chimpanzees in the distance, making you feel like you've been transported to the jungle!
