A Trip To This Charming, Working Mill In Kentucky Is Unforgettable
Weisenberger Mill in Kentucky, established in 1865, is a historic, family-operated mill producing high-quality flour and mixes using traditional methods.
Kentucky's rich history is evident in the many historic buildings all over the state, and some of those buildings house businesses that have been around for more than a century. Here'a a historic mill that you'll want to check out:
August Weisenberger, a German immigrant, established his mill in 1865, and it's now operated by the sixth generation of Weisenbergers. The original mill was torn down and rebuilt in 1913; this building has been standing for more than 100 years.
The mill is located at 2545 Weisenberger Mill Rd., Midway, KY 40347.
This working mill produces flour, grits, cornmeal, and a variety of mixes for cooking and baking, using methods developed in the early years of its operation.
Nestled on South Elkhorn Creek, the mill gets the power for its twin turbines from the rushing water. The creek is a great spot for fishing, and the mills' surroundings are just beautiful.
The mill has three stories, each with its own purpose. On the main level, the turbines operate to power everything throughout the building.
Upstairs, grain is separated and sifted and turned into a variety of products.
Weisenberger Mills has developed more than 70 products over the years, and its old-fashioned milling methods created some of the highest-quality flour you'll find.
Products are bagged and shipped right from this mill to grocery stores, restaurants, and online customers from all over the world.
From the mills' most basic products like flour and corn meal...
...to its specialty mixes like pizza crust mix, pancake mix, hush puppy mix and more, you'll always enjoy great quality mixed in with a whole lot of Kentucky history.
The mill is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
