Here’s The Story Behind The Massive Flying Saucer In Kentucky

For as old-fashioned and Southern as Kentucky is, the Bluegrass has a quirky side, too. Paranormal museums, bizarre legends, massive roadside attractions... Kentucky has quite a weird side! For further proof of this, simply head to Covington. For hovering above this historic river town in northern Kentucky, there is a massive flying saucer, and it's been there for decades. The Futuro House, or "spaceship house" as it's commonly referred to, has been part of the Kentucky landscape since the 1980s.

Contrary to appearances, this is not, in fact, an alien spacecraft in Covington, Kentucky.

Is it a UFO? A Martian dwelling? Something different altogether?

It's none of those things. This is a house: the ultra-modern-yet-also-retro Futuro House in Kentucky.

The Futuro House, or simply "Futuro" as it's called, is a round, prefabricated plastic house designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. He designed these domelike dwellings to be portable ski chalets.

Less than 100 Futuro homes were built during the late 1960s and early 1970s, making them a rare relic from another time.

In Covington, it's as if a little silver saucer landed on a Kentucky hillside just to give folks something to talk about. This Futuro UFO house in Covington was manufactured in 1976 and moved to its current location in 1987.

The Futuro House has become a bit of a legend in Kentucky, with people driving from all over to see this bizarre abode in person. You'll find it at 222 Wright Street, Covington, KY, 41011. It's a private residence that's fenced in, so please be respectful.
