These Must-Visit Places In Kentucky Amish Country Will Give You A New Appreciation

The Amish are a good people that live life by tradition, not by modern technology. There are lots of different groups of Amish all across Kentucky. Some say we have the most diverse group of Amish in the US. Visiting an Amish community is like stepping back in time, usually. It's a great way to show the kids what life "could" be like.

Here are some diverse Amish Communities across the Bluegrass State:

Other Amish Communitites

Breckinridge, Fleming, Lincoln, Lancaster, Casey and Logan County all also have Amish communities with varying traditional regulations.

Christian County

This county is home to two separate Amish communalities, one of which is an Old Order Mennonite group, and the second oldest colony in the state, formed in 1972. It's near Crofton. The other, larger settlement was formed in 1989 and sits between Pembroke and Hopkinsville.

Marion

Marion in Crittenden County is home to the third eldest group in the state, formed in 1977.

Mumfordville

This community close to Horse Cave began in 1989, but has rapidly increased in residents. There are now more than 13 church districts.

New Order Amish

The Electric New Order Group near Guthrie shys away from most Amish traditions, living a more modern life style. Due to more traditional residents, the group actually split in twain.

Old Amish Order in Guthrie

There is the other order near Guthrie that leaned more towards traditional and separated from the electric Amish. This is the oldest group of Amish in Kentucky, forming in 1958.

Swartzentruber Amish

These are extremely conservative Amish Groups who tend to stick to the traditional ways. One group is located near Mayfield in Graves County, the other near Sonora in Hardin County.

Those that miss the old traditions, such as handmade furniture, gardening fresh fruits and vegetables, and living life with less technology will enjoy an Amish community. This is where we see a lot of hard work, and contentment with what is created by hand. Technology usually stays outside the borders in most Amish towns, but there are exceptions.
