Even The Grinch Would Marvel At This Incredible Lakefront Winter Wonderland In Illinois
The holidays are upon us, and Illinoisans know that it's all about a balance of hot and cold. We want enough snow for a classic white Christmas and snowmen, but also need the warmth of hot chocolate by a fireplace. As a Christmas Eve baby, I often seek out the winter holiday experiences that can do both, giving the best of both worlds. While there are a ton of amazing Christmas events in Chicago, Illinois, this indoor/outdoor festival truly puts the star on top of the tree.
Winter is one of the best times to experience Navy Pier, and Light Up The Lake is the perfect cold-weather wonderland to soak up the season. From Nov. 24-Dec. 31, the pier will showcase spectacular light displays, ice skating, fire pits with s'mores, artisan markets, pop-ups, axe throwing, craft workshops, live music, fireworks, photo ops, the heated Centennial Ferris Wheel, and much more.
The event is great for all ages and is free with some paid and ticketed extras. While previously the celebration was held indoors, it's expanded into the largest indoor/outdoor holiday experience in the city.
Bundle up and walk through dazzling tunnels, past huge sparkling presents, and merry trees, all showcasing thousands of twinkling lights.
Get some holiday shopping done at Lolita's Bodega, showcasing five distinct market areas, each with an array of talented Chicago artists. The festival will also feature a number of fun, themed pop-ups — from Margaritaville's Christmas Island to Harry Caray's Tavern to a lakefront lodge, a massive snowglobe, and more.
Make sure to get a photo in front of the festive 40-foot tree and check out one of the event's many free holiday workshops. Or, get moving with the groovy sounds of live music. Plus, on some Fridays, you can sign up for an axe throwing session or get a gift wrapped for free.
Don't forget about Santa! He'll be making scheduled visits to Reunion's Santa's Southern Workshop and Harry Caray's Lakefront Lodge between Nov. 19 and Dec. 23.
Cap the night off with some toasty s'mores by the fire and some of Navy Pier's famous fireworks. The free, award-winning fireworks shows take place on Saturdays at 9 p.m., as well as on Sunday, Dec. 31.
As one of the best Christmas events in Chicago, Illinois, Light Up The Lake on Navy Pier is a holiday bucket list must. Start planning your visit by checking out the Navy Pier website and Facebook page. And while you're in town, why not make it a winter weekend getaway?
