11 Things to Do in the Dark in Idaho (It’s Not What You Think)
Even when the sun clocks out in Idaho, the adventure clock is still ticking — especially once you know where to look.
Even in the doldrums of winter, when the nights stretch on and the days slip away in the blink of an eye, there’s no reason to call it quits early. Those long, dark hours are your ticket to seeing Idaho in a whole new light — think moonlight, starlight, and everything in between. Then, when summer rolls in with its endless sunshine that lingers well into the evening, those warm summer nights are still a fantastic opportunity to dive into Idaho’s after-hours magic. This season, grab a flashlight, ditch the curfew, and let’s uncover what Idaho has to offer when the lights go out!
1. Bundle Up for Shoshone Falls After Dark
A dazzling spectacle held annually at Southern Idaho's most beloved waterfall, Shoshone Falls, lights up every weekend during peak spring runoff for its much-anticipated Shoshone Falls After Dark events. Typically held during the entire month of May, the Snake River Canyon comes to life as a spectacular waterfall light show is choreographed to music, illuminating the thundering water in vibrant technicolor. To attend, you'll need to purchase a vehicle pass in advance (ideally as soon as possible, as these shows sell out FAST), and you will have the opportunity to walk through the park to enjoy the waterfall from multiple viewpoints. The event also offers refreshments from vendors like the Glazed Over food truck. Just remember to arrive early and dress for the weather as the show goes on rain or shine!
2. Soak in a Hot Spring Under the Stars
It sounds like the most blissful getaway imaginable: slipping into a steaming hot spring surrounded by rugged Idaho wilderness, the night sky stretching endlessly above you, with nothing but the sound of crickets chirping and water bubbling to break the silence. The crisp mountain air bites just enough to make the warm, mineral-rich water feel like heaven, and overhead, the stars shine brighter than you thought possible. From tucked-away natural pools to established hot spring spots, Idaho is a hot spring paradise with plenty of options for a late-night dip — like The Springs in Idaho City. Just double-check any and all official hours before you dive in.
3. Catch the Latest Release at an Old-Fashioned Drive-In
Drive-in movies are one of those nostalgic activities that never seem to go out of style. Fortunately, Idaho still has a few drive-in theaters scattered around the state where you can catch the latest action movie from the comfort of your own car, load up on as many snacks as you want, and enjoy every single credit scene without having to share an armrest with a stranger.
4. Go Stargazing in a Dark Sky Area
Idaho’s dark sky areas are the real deal, boasting pitch-black horizons that are lit up by more stars than you ever knew existed. With or without a telescope, these wide-open spaces are the perfect places to grab a blanket, kick back, and let the Milky Way steal the show. The silence, the sparkle, and the sheer scale of the night sky will stop you in your tracks (bonus points if you catch a meteor shower lighting up the night!). Some of our favorite stargazing spots include: Bruneau Dunes State Park, Craters of the Moon (which will reopen in spring 2026), Farragut State Park, and many more.
5. Go Night Skiing at Kelly Canyon
Get those poles and snow boots ready — Kelly Canyon Resort in Ririe cranks up the fun after dark! The trails are lit, the air is crisp, and the slopes feel like your own after the daytime crowds disappear. If you haven't tried this favorite mountain pastime after dark, know that carving turns by moonlight is a whole new kind of winter magic. Night ski tickets can be added to any daytime ski package or purchased as a year-round pass for near 24/7 slope access. Wrap it up with a hot drink in the lodge, and you’re ready for a perfect night on the mountain.
6. Dine Above the Clouds in Sun Valley
Dining at the gorgeous Roundhouse in Sun Valley is a bucket-list experience. Perched high on Bald Mountain, this spot offers unbeatable views that stretch above the clouds for miles. Pair the breathtaking scenery with an evening of incredible food, plus a scenic gondola ride up — a trip that carries you high above the twinkling lights of the valley — and you have a romantic meal to remember. Plus, if you've packed your skis along, you can blaze midnight trails all the way back down the slopes!
7. Visit an Observatory
Not in favor of braving the cold or sprawling on the ground to enjoy Idaho's brilliant night sky views? Visiting an Idaho observatory takes traditional stargazing to the next level. Bruneau Dunes State Park Observatory is a standout with one of the largest public telescopes in the country, perfect for zooming in on planets and nebulae. The Faulkner Planetarium in Twin Falls and the Whittenberger Planetarium in Caldwell both offer a more guided experience with their mesmerizing interactive star shows. No matter where you go, it’s your chance to get up close and personal with the cosmos.
8. Take a Northern Lights Winter Dinner Cruise
Think you have to head to Alaska to catch the Northern Lights? Just head to the Idaho Panhandle! A Northern Lights Winter Dinner Cruise on Lake Coeur d’Alene is a bucket list must-do, carrying bundled-up diners and night sky lovers deep into the heart of prime Aurora-observing territory. But as if gliding across the dark, glassy water with the glow of purple and green lights illuminating the lake wasn't enough, you'll also be beautifully surrounded by snowy mountain panoramas the whole way. Be sure to come hungry for this unforgettable night on the water; cruise patrons will get to enjoy a cozy dinner while on board.
9. Skate Under the Stars

Late-night skating in Idaho is a whole different vibe, and ice skaters have a few different options to choose from when it comes to this classic winter activity. The Sun Valley Outdoor Ice Rink is one of only a few year-round developed outdoor ice rinks in the U.S., and midwinter's shortened daylight hours mean you will most likely find yourself gliding under the stars with the rink lit up against the pitch-black sky. You can also head to LC Ice Arena in Lewiston, which offers indoor late-night public skating on the weekends, complete with a lit-up rink.
10. Sip and Sail Away on a Sunset Cocktail Cruise
For a summer bucket list must-do, climb aboard The Idaho for a dreamy Sunset Cocktail Cruise on Payette Lake, one of the best ways to experience McCall! Payette Lake spans over 5,000 acres, offering stunning views as you cruise through its crystal-clear waters with the jagged Central Idaho mountains as a backdrop. The boat’s spacious deck gives you the perfect front-row seat to the sky’s fiery show over the water, but on chillier evenings, you can also opt for the comfort of the enclosed cabin. So grab a drink or two (this is an adults-only cruise, after all), kick back, and let this lakeside paradise work its magic all the way until nightfall.
11. Get Your Glow On at Firefly Nights
Ready for an "after dark" event that's completely unexpected? Moss Greenhouses in Jerome was one of the first in the country to bring a glow-in-the-dark flower to consumer markets: the Firefly Petunia. A beautiful garden staple by day, this new one-of-a-kind variety unveils mesmerizing luminescence after dusk. In celebration, the now-annual Firefly Nights is a special event hosted by Moss Greenhouses at Edwards Greenhouse in Boise as part of the Idaho Horticulture Expo from January 21 to January 23, 2026. The event features stunning displays of Firefly Bioluminescent Petunias, plus an evening filled with live music, fire twirlers, glow-in-the-dark art experiences, and plenty of fun activities. Attendees also get to enjoy free drinks and appetizers, plus their very own Firefly Petunia as a keepsake!
